Gentle Roads North

I'll be riding in my new GS :D next Sunday/Monday by taking it from London to Halifax, a bit of local stuff there in the week and then back again on the Friday night/Saturday (depending on whether I feel like returning home or riding more/staying away!)

Any suggestions on good roads to take/areas to visit on the way?

Any good evening rides from Halifax?

Remember, I'll be trying to keep under 4,000 rpm for all these journeys, so I clock up the 600 miles and get it serviced before going on a trip to Normandy/Loire Valley in Sept. Any advice on that trip would be great, too!

Take the Heptonstall road from Hebden Bridge, carry on past the village, up the hill till you get to a road that forks off right. This is the Widdop road to the Packhorse Inn. Keep following this road to a t junc and turn right and then keep going straight on till you get to Nelson. Turn around and do it all again stopping at the pub for a lovely pint of Theakstons XB! Also, the Kieghley road from HB to Oxenhope is really good, take the 1st left in Ox, it goes back on itself, and keep going straight till the T junc, turn left and blast this road all the way past Scartop to the next T junc, turn left and head for Nelson/Colne. Get to big roundabout take left lane and go past Asda on the right. Take left turn at next roundabout go about 1k and fork right on bend where the road goes up a small hill, go right at the T junc and up the hill. This is the road i mentioned first. Keep going straight on till you go past some small reservoirs and watch for the left turn that leaps out on you suddenly signposted HB, go down here up the other side and continue onto the Packhorse... etc, etc!!!

Thanks MMM

I'll try your roads next week, which brings up another question - if I don't want to get lost on my travels, what's a good choice of UK/regional map to use in a GS tankbag?

:D Too excited about new bike to concentrate on work!

Well if you do his first route, you may well see me at work in Hebden Bridge, do the second and you'll go right past my house in Oxenhope. Let me know times and days and i may make one in dependant on shifts etc.
Another one is to go out of Halifax towards Elland, take the Greetland road towards Stainland and you go through Barkisland and out over the M62 into Lancashire and Dobcross, a right there takes you back over the moors passing junction 22 and then follow the 672 down through Ripponden and Sowerby Bridge back to Halifax.

Couldn't pm, so...

Dave,

I'll be in the area Tues, Wed and Thurs evenings next week. Work finishes at about 5:30 for me (in Halifax). Feel free to be in touch if you feel like a (slowish) ride. It would be fun for me.

Can't seem to get access to pm you - do I need to be a sponsor?

I think I know the road you mention through Ripponden, etc. I drove it in a car a few weeks ago, past the reservoirs. Amazing countryside (a bit different from Regent's Park, my nearest green area of any size)!

The French paper Michelin maps have good definition and have a range for UK,from specialist bookshops.
Also I also use RAC Bartholomew series(again paper - easier for folding).

You can get the Michelin Maps at Northern Map Company, Orgreave trading estate, Handsworth, Sheffield, they are wholesalers but will sell you if you go there, I paid £4.00 each.

Pete, you should now be the proud owner etc etc. I have sent you an e mail re a ride next Tuesday evening.
Pub stop? how many miles/time out do you want.

Pete - just sent you a message re your trip to France.
Just realised you're up in Yarksha next week - will bve free to join Boulders and you for a spin when I can show you my etchings (oooo errr Mrs!!!)

Big Thanks

Many thanks to Jim for showing me a couple of dales and showing me the steepest and twistiest roads I've ridden so far!

Thanks also to Dave for offering a ride out. Maybe next time when we can see the other side of the valleys and I'm not so tired from riding!

Cheers, guys
