Was curious to find out why none of my G/S warning lights worked, so took the front of the headlight off to have a look. It's a new unit and when one of the previous owners fitted it, I think he just cut the wires to the warning lights and taped them up :spitfire

I've got 6 wires taped together (plus 1 loose red one :nenau ) and 8 pins to connect them to. I think it's time to :rtfm then down to Maplins for connectors and a crimping tool.....

Gawd! look at those unshielded terminals on the ignition switch and their not crimped properly.

There should be a round plug on connector that goes onto those plug terminals. Your loose wires connect onto those. I'm not sure if they are the same size as octal pin relay bases - maybe one of the other lads will know. If they are maybe something suitable could be found. Like this (snip off the mounting plate) http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/rswww/s...kjigelejcefeceeldgondhgj.0&cacheID=uknetscape

Cheers for the advice and the RS link - it's a good start to know there should be some sort of plug that goes on there, rather than lots of individual connectors! :thumb2 Investigations to continue today....

The pins are too big in relation to the diameter i think......I've got loads of those relay bases lying around and I'm pretty sure one wouldn't fit :)

Thanks for the tip-off Fanum :thumb2
Calls to Motobins, Sherlocks, Motorworks and BMW Sawbridgeworth have all revealed that:
1) "Yes, it is a plug you need", and
2) "No, you can't buy them separately, only as part of a wiring loom and that's very pricey (if you can find one)".

So it looks like I'll be crimping connectors on one-by-one and then working out which wires connect to which pin, via Haynes/Clymer (+ trial/error :augie ).

:beerjug:

Er, actually. hold on, I think I've sold you a pup there.......

The standard ISO 8 pin relay base may well fit.....I was looking at a non standard American one we use........

I don't have any digital calipers I'm afraid so the best I can do is measure with a ruler......but between the centres of the two holes marked here, it's 16mm (as close as I can get)

The pin holes themselves look to be about 3mm....a 3.5mm jack plug certainly won't fit down them but it's close.

I've got a fair few of these lying around if you want one, or they're easy to get from Maplins etc....I can bring one up to Llangollen if that's any good????

:thumb2 Cheers Fanum - I'll get measuring and let you know how I get on. Thanks very much for taking pics and dimensions. :bow
I won't be at Llangollen (as well as these lights, there's quite a bit of other stuff to sort on the G/S to get it legal again, so that just leaves the orange bike :augie  ) but there's a Maplins not too far from me.

I woulda Said it looks Suspiciously like Sparkie Farmers Work:hide .
Reminds me of a Garage i used to have Vehicles frequent, they
routinely "Cut the Wires".

Cheeky Sod :nono I'd have used soldered and crimped connectors with a rubber insulated sleeve over it.

You won't be able to fit a standard octal pin base in there. I had one of these in mind if the dimensions were correct - with the chrome mounting ring cut off. These are for standard 8 pin relays but the holes take different diameter pins.

It's a pity you only have 6 wires because there should be 8 :nenau

Blue wire to Charge warning light
Green/blue to Charge warning/Neutral/Oil pressure -ve
Brown/black to Neutral warning light
Brown/Green to Oil pressure warning light
Brown to High beam -Ve
White to High beam +ve
Blue/Red to Indicator warning light
Blue/black to indicator warning

Just pop out the bulbs and "bell" them through to the pins using a multimeter on it's "buzzer" setting.

There should only be one red in there and that should go to the ignition switch.

Your photo shows a white going to the ignition switch. According to my diagram there isn't a white on there at all just these connections:-

30 - Red
58 - Grey
15 - Green
56 - Yellow

:hapybnce:
Yes, it's beginning to worry me too! :D Thanks for listing out the wires and colours, I'm going to have another look at it with the multimeter. However, if I still can't make head or tail of the rat's nest in there at least the bike still runs so I'll probably not risk making it worse and track down a local specialist to sort it out.... .

Me being a Supervisor

I'd ask that nice Mr Tarka or Mr Farmer to make you a new front loom:augie
It could be fitted at LLANGOLLEN and I'll be bringing a full tool kit with me in wobblybox:D

It's not that straight forward Proff, If theres a few wires missing then the rest of the loom could have also been chopped about. If you fancied a ride to Loughborough now the weathers improved I'd gladly sort it out for you and give the rest of the wiring a health check and fix anything that was iffy.

I'm going to Llangollen so you could stay at mine on Thursday night, we'd sort the wiring out and then ride there on Friday.

That's a quality offer Rob, thanks very much :thumb2

However, I don't think I'll be ready for the trip to Llangollen, if I'm honest. As well as this electrical issue, I've got a few other problems to sort out, just to get it MOT'ed. However, once it's back on the road and legal, a trip up to lufbra for an expert eye over the electrics would be very, very handy, cheers!

I'll drop you a PM when it's back on the road.
