That's the skinniest back tyre i've seen on a sports bike in a long time :)

I reckon the final production colour will be blue, black & white, just like how it looks at the bottom of the fairing. It should look fairly good with a proper paint job.

.... and here it is - the finished bike that's going into the showrooms

MCN tossers write this:
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The most hardcore sports BMW ever built has finally been revealed at the Paris Motorcycle show.

The HP2 Sport is losely based on the R1200S sports tourer, but almost every part of the bike has been changed or modified in the name of speed and handling.

* See video of MCN testing the Prototype bike at Magny Cours

The result is mouth-watering - BMW claim 128bhp at 8750rpm, and an all-up wet weight of only 199kg. The dry weight (no fluids at all) is claimed to be 178kg – just 1kg more than the claimed dry weight for the 2007 Yamaha R1.

The bike has been developed publicly this year in the hands of BMW’s factory endurance team, who campaigned the prototype in the world endurance championship, notching up respectable finishes despite a 40bhp deficit over tuned 1000cc inline fours and riders restricted by cylinder heads grinding on almost every corner!

The road bike is almost identical in specification to the race bike, and features Ohlins suspension, Brembo brakes, a quickshifter as standard, self-supporting carbon seat unit and full carbon-fibre bodywork, race-spec dashboard and even a special version of BMW’s ABS designed to prevent the rear wheel lifting.

See the October 3 edition of MCN for an in-depth look at the most exciting new BMW in the last decade.

Never liked sportsbikes much, but this... Oh my!!! Now this is a proper designer at work, the result is a very very very horny boxer :bow:bow:bow:bow

I bet the gearbox is no better than any other boxer either. I think the R1200S makes for a reasonable sport tourer (still wouldn't want one though :barf)but trying to develop a hyper sport bike around the boxer engine is a waste of time methinks. 14.5K ?

I think it looks fab.

BUT,even with all that carbon it still weighs more than most 1000cc sportsbike costing a tad more than half as much.

And 128 bhp is frankly shite when all the fours are making about 40bhp more than that !

If it was £10.5k but £14.5 is taking the piss.

Not a specialist of marketing, but the whole "HP2" acronym isn't about any real hyper-sports. It's about niche and desire.

The same was about HP2 Enduro when it first came out: what's the point of having 105bhp enduro?

There's no 2 cylinder sportsbike in the market that is equipped with a boxer engine, shaft driven paralever rear and telelever front.

These facts alone puts this particular (actually all of them) HP2 into another class of machines IMHO. It's a fully niche class. And that high price marks natevly comes along with it. There aren't any cheap Porches, while some much cheaper sports cars toss many of them in performance. Do people buy Porches only because of performance specs?

I think it's rather about the desire for originality. There are TONZ of boring V-Twins from tonz of makers, TONZ of different I4s that are shamelessly similar to each other by outer looks and character. But what you get is the only stickly-out cylindered sports bike in the field and the particular looks and riding character that comes with it. What you get with the HP2 package is a non-commercial product that any Johnny-the-Average can't or won't buy, only bashes its high price tag and wierdo concept design from the distance, "what's the point" etc.

It's definately a bike NOT ment for most of tossers around, only for few hardcore fanatics :thumb2 (like all the HP2s)

And... never compare twins with fours! Two different worlds, apples and oranges.

Is it really double OHC?

Very nice but the rear lights unit doesn't do it any favours...oh, and all the mag journos will slag off der crazy indicators....as usual.

It is in the press report , first line.

A nice new R1 and a few grand to spare for a holiday on the GS is what I'd do :aidan

I have to agree with you precisely.

I was thinking about an HP2 Enduro/Megamoto/Sport but decided instead to spend a few grand on my GS (Wilbers, Metal Mules, Wunderlich seat, 41lt tank, paint job etc etc). With the £12,000 saving I've bought a new R1 which I collect Saturday. :)

This STILL leaves me enough left over to fund a six-week trip to Africa on the GS and a trip to the Ring on the R1.:D

The HP2 Sport reminds me of the story of the King's new clothes. To a wise man, it is a desirable niche model for people who appreciate being different but to a fool it appears as an over priced oddity for people with too much money.

Dealer told me it was supposed to be a more reliable alternative to a Ducati. So its still way more expensive than a Ducati, heavier than a Ducati, slower than a Ducati, and if it has as many faults as the HP2 Enduro than possibly less reliable than a Ducati. Apart from that, yes a viable alternative.

I suspect I have no chance of a test ride on one.
