Several people often ask for suggestions for a short weekend break in France.

Here is one that works very well.

Train ferry to Calais, late afternoon / early evening and stay at Wisques. This is just a short hop down the superslab (A26) to J3.

Next morning. Take the same motorway (A26) to Cambrai and leave at J8. This will take about an hour. This gets the duller northern French roads out of the way.

D939 to Cambrai, then take the ring-road (it actually runs through the town) and turn right on the D960 to Bohain-en-Vermandois.

At Bohain-en-Vermandois turn right onto the D13 to Ribemont.

At Ribemont stay on the D13, past La Fere, to St-Gobain.

At St-Gobain stay on the D13 / D5 to Coucy-le-Chateau.

At Coucy-le-Chateau, turn right onto D934 to Blerancourt.

There is a good hotel at Blerancourt.

Coming back

Either return the reverse route, going straight to Calais and home.

Or

D934 back towards Coucy-le-Chateau, then turn left on the D1.

Stay on the D1 to St Quentin, where you can join the A26 motorway at J11. Then it's simply straight back to Calais (in about one and a half / two hours) and the train / ferry to Dover.

Or

Leave Blerancourt on the D934 to Noyon.

At Noyon, turn right on the D932 to Ham.

At Ham turn right on the D930 then straight left on the D937 to Peronne.

At Peronne, turn left on the D44, then soon right on the D917 to J9 of the A26 motorway (just south east of Cambrai) and then straight back to Calais and home.

NOTE: It is certainly not an iron butt ride. It's really very easy.
