We are considering including a trip down the Route Des Grandes Alps and noted that it's best split over a couple of days.

We know of a lovely Chambre D'Hote just outside Thones, by Annecy and will probably start from there.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a good place to stay after say 4-5 riding, separated by lunch on route?

We prefer Chambre D'hote type places

I'm now toying with doing the Route Des Grandes Alpes on my own the second week of June and then possibly link up with some mates down in Spain to do the Pyrenees.

Is accommodation easy to come by in June without booking ahead,as I would just blag it and stop when ready each day ?

I stayed at this place when I did the RGA. It is a lovely place on the Col Des Aravis with a cracking view and nice rooms. Run by one of the motorcycle cameramen for the tour de france:

Atteh southenr end of the route we stayed here. Smallish hotel, parking for bikes, and a nice little village. At the bottom of the Col de Turini.

Not chambre d'hotes, but cheaper than anything on the coast.

Why not give us a try, we're on the Grandes Alpes route, situated 8 hairpin bends up from the D902 on the outskirts of Morzine.

B&B accommodation [evening meals also possible], secure garaging, bike washing facilities for your bike, washing machine for your clothes and a stunning view from our hot tub whilst you soak your body after a good days riding. What could be better? Oh yes, a beer in both hands as well! :beerjug:

[Discounts for all UKGSer.com tossers]

Look forward to meeting some of you one day out here in sunny Morzine.

In May this year two of us did the RGA and the Central Masif, and we used "Logis de France". Reasonable prices 30-40 Euros per room.

If travelling alone or in a pair I cant see you would have any problems, if in numbers I would suggest booking each night before you leave the hotel.

If you have a Tomtom [dont know about the others] all we did was at the end of the day,tap in the downloaded logis POI and we normally had the choice of 6-8 within 20-30kms. 10 nights and no problems except some of the high Alpine villages are closed and so we usually had to go down to the larger villages/towns in the valleys. It might be different in the high summer season.:rob

Not to multiply similar topics - has anybody been there recently? Is the place crowded? WBT accomodation without booking, say, during the next two weeks?
Just the French Alps look like the only place in Europe without everyday raining.
TIA

The weather is very good in the Alps at the moment, fabulously sunny weather during the day with the odd thunder storm to clear the air at night.

We have had many GS'ers to stay over the past few weeks, all thanks to this forum, and one couple even returned to spend the whole of their second week with us because they enjoyed the area so much [they left this morning].

We have availability during the next two weeks so if you fancy Morzine and it's fantastic scenery, mountain passes, lots of twisties and champagne in our hot tub, we'd love to meet you...!

Cheers, Steve
