Hi tossers my mate needs some help.
He's getting spammed in his email can anyone recomend a good spam blocker that is free!
if possible send it to his email address.

HERE :D

Sorry, this made me laugh... you post his email address on a public forum to avoid spam... it's an open invite for more, surely!? :)

Adam

Thanks Adam, I've altered it now to stop the 'spiders' harvesting the address... Paul G

I'm getting seriously pissed off with the Spam I'm getting, I didn't check my emails for three days, when I did there were nearly 1200 emails for me mostly spam - it's getting to be a serious problem

It's peculiar.....I've had absolutely no spam on my main email accounts...I'm with NTL.

I get a small amount on my Hotmail and used to get a bit on a few others i used to use but otherwise...none.

There must be a reason for it....but fekk knows what....i do my fair share of, ahem, 'surfing', and i use ICQ, Diet Kazaa Lite and have been known to poke around on Warez sites too so it's not that.

Ah well......perhaps even the spammers hate me:(

I have about 4 e-mail accounts at the moment....

2 are freebie hotmail accounts (spam catchers) that I use if ever I'm aked for an address (1 for general use & 1 for friends/purchases etc). They can fill up with spam without a prob... though the hotmail spam filter isn't bad. Just clear em out once a month.

I've also got a work address & a home address (for established comms) & hey presto no spam. Clear as a bell.

A bit over the top I know but just 1 freebie account to catch the spam would work.... & never give out your primary address for general enquiries.

Cheers Paul, but he's already being spammed so it doesn't make much difference. I've already told him to 'do away' with his current address and start up a new private one backed up by a couple of hotmails etc. Thanks for everyone's assistance to date.

Don't worry you will never rid yourself of spam unless you only accept e-mails from known senders. There are a number of products around that will place an e-mail into a folder and send a reply back to sender. Automated e-mails do not have have the capability of responding... The danger is of course that you will miss that one important e-mail.

Sensibly it comes down to protection:

1. Avoid giving out your e-mail
2. If you are just asking for information have a secondary e-mail that will collect the clutter
3. Virus protect your system
4. Don't use Microsoft Passport
5. Watch out for Spyware
6. Clear your cookies
7. Use a spyware sweeper

Since I used started using Window Washer and Spysweeper ( http://www.webroot.com/ ) the spam on both my hotmail accounts have reduced to almost nothing. Interestingly Spysweeper identified a trojan that Norton did not pick-up. Mind you Spysweeper did not fix - I had to fix manually using instructions from Symantec.

I have had Window Washer for some time so I assume it was Spy Sweeper that made the difference. But really the main impact was after I removed the Spyware Trojan...

Oh, also I also use a firewall.. I still have 1 event every 10-30seconds in the log...

I cannot remember the last time I received an email advising me that a 17meter penis is required......

spamwasher, download fer free works for me.but dont open emails from people you dont know and dont give your web address away unless is is to Honda Motorcycle corp who need your address to deliver your free ST1300  :beerjug:

As someone else said, try mailwasher as I find it good and it is FREE, Ricky:)

only the one with adverts is really free. the rather better pro version, you are supposed to pay for.

I've been using a web forwarding company called Firevision for a number of years now. I can set up a whole load of addresses i.e. dick999@tut2.co.uk, dick998@tut2.co.uk and have them forwarded to my current "proper" email address. If one starts to get a lot of spam I simply shut it down. It costs £10 for 2 years and also gives you the domain name of your choice.

As far as I know most email addresses for spamming are got from spiders trawling web sites for strings of characters containing an @ sign (like sendspamto@thisaddressyoutossers.co.uk :D). So be very wary when asked to enter an email address on a website.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Dick
