GS650 Shock & Chain

My 2000 GS has devoured it's second chain (a Rhental) in less than 4,500 miles ( new sprockets at same time). Is this typical?
The original was in better shape when it was replaced @ 11,500.

Also the rear shocker is on about 35 of 45 clicks of preload and 3 turns of damping screw (Kitted up I am 15+ stones of rippling lard) and the bike seems to have lost it's lovely magic carpet ride feel.
Anyone experienced similar?

Chris,
were your replacement sprockets aluminium? These do wear a lot faster than steel, which in turn will knacker your chain.
Check that your chain isn't over tight - sit on the bike and then check for play. I find that BMW recommended slack equates to a very tight chain! (on my Dakar). I'm only on 9000 miles at the moment (lots of trail riding in there) and have only had to adjust it a couple of times (came back from 6000 mile service overtight!). But when I replace, it will be with steel sprockets.
I can't feel any apparent wear on the rear shock yet.

Ride safely....and enjoy.........

Thanks.

The new sprockets (Genuine BMW) are untouched.
I'm begining to think it's not a heavy duty chain as the service receipt says it only cost £48.....

PS

Fitted new DID X-ring chain.
Disturbingly easy.
Have I flared my rivets enough?

Almost scared to go out!
