fuel light comes on after five miles and stays on, switch it off and stays off for five miles then comes back on
Anybody got an idea as to why.

Not without details of which bike you are talking about.

Although, at a guess, I'd say that the fuel level is low.

Are you expecting the light to be on, or not?

And do you tip the bike to the left and / or right when you "switch it off" and is "switching it off" the ignition
