caught the ferry from Newcastle to stavanger on 17th june and sat with the lads from BIKE magazine doing a feature on sports 600's going to the north cape in 5 days! Had a rite old laugh bout it but chippie wood the biggest - he had the vstrom :guitarist ..you saw it here first :cool

what a country , couldnt beleave thier motorway up north (e6) was a little twisty thing (with offroad near alta) for such a big expensive country.Met a guy doing the north cape on a penny farthing complete with the flat cap and tweed etc , tasted bear meat in finland and rough camped in the jutonheiman nat park in a snow storm!A great three weeks and 6500 miles.

Considering this as next years trip. Has anyone got any advice on how much time you would need to go to The Nordkapp an back? We would be taking the ferry from Newcastle. Cheers

AFAIK, DFDS are withdrawing the Newcastle/Norway ferry service after this September.

I would go north via either Sweden or Finland (that is the boring part - and now I've seen enough trees to last a life time), and then south via Norway, and then at Bodø decide for either E6 (Arctic circle via land) or RV17, with some ferry crossings.

E6 is not a motorway. The E signifies "trans european". The road standard will be according to the amount of traffic, i.e motorway down south, and cattle track up north. The reason for this is that anybody in need of a motorway goes through Sweden and Finland. However, there is no "offroad" on the E6, just road.

You should try the "motorway" between Canada and Alaska some time. :) Surprisingly good GS roads for such "big countries".

sorry to disagree Thorium, but there is a section of 8km up near alta that is very much "off-road", or there was 3 weeks ago when we did the Nordkapp run. There is a major set of road-works going on where they have completely removed the surface and all of the base-layer, so it's pure mud ! The road is fully open, and you are fighting with the lorries doing the road-works for space, and the on-coming traffic. To say it's off-putting would be a serious understatement ! There are some lovely ruts that you find yourself following and can easily follow off the edge of the main mud into the ditch on the side (I very nearly did ). But having said that, it's only 8km and perfectly do-able, we just weren't expecting it.

Ahh... you were referring to gravel roads. Yep, there are thousands of kilometers of gravel roads in in Norway, some temporary and others permanent. However, they are still considered roads.

Be aware that off-roading in Norway (motorized travel off the road network) is illegal without a special permit.

Cheers,
TM
