We are going (by 4 wheels ) to Ross for a long break - last time we went to Tintern, Symonds Yat, Chepstow, Hereford and a few other places.

Any other recommendations - castles - towns - etc. please?

No help for places to see but I rode past Ross-On-Wye last week and it looks fantastic from the road :thumb2
Is Ludlow anywhere near?

Raglan Castle. N51 46.124 W2 50.950

And there's a nice pub close by at N51 46.353 W2 52.392.

And don't forget The Bell Inn at Skenfrith. N51 52.670 W2 47.362 :thumb2

If you get chance search out a place round there called glasshouse.
Fantastic traditional pub there last time i went:thumb

Come over the bridge & visit Berkeley (and they heard his screams in Berkeley Village) Castle. In their day the Berkeley family owned all the land up the M4 corridor up to Berkley Square. Stop in for lunch/dinner in Thornbury Castle ( Thornbury village) one of top 10 restaurants in the UK....:thumb

Did I add, they take Visa....

Goodrich Castle - splendid views over the Wye Valley and beyond from the top level of the keep. Plenty of others in the Marches area http://www.castlewales.com/wales_se.html

Malvern Hills

Glasshouse, as mentioned above: park in one of the pubs (promising to return for lunch) and walk to the top of May Hill (located just off the A40 half way between Ross & Gloucester).

Forest of Dean - http://www.visitforestofdean.co.uk/ lots to do, especially if you like outdoor sports. Follow the links for cycling, hire a bike from Pedalabikeaway, do the 10km ride, then get lunch or dinner at The Woodman, Parkend http://www.woodman-parkend.co.uk/

Fancy food: Bell at Skenfrith as mentioned above or try to get a reservation at the Michelin starred restaurant at Whitebrook http://www.crownatwhitebrook.co.uk/home.html

Markets: http://www.monmouthshire.gov.uk/Monmouth/English/Leisure_and_Visitors/Markets/ - I like the farmers' markets where you can sample the produce

Ross itself, dining: Obilash Indian restaurant was good last time I ate there. Pheasant Bistro has a fab wine list. Avoid the pubs at the lower end of Broad St and Brookend St. Crown & Sceptre is the best real ale pub and does decent food, gets very busy with trendy young types at weekends. At the weekend, the pubs over the bridge at Wilton are more relaxed. My favourite is the White Lion http://www.wyenot.com/whitelion01.htm
Go to the Prospect, just off the main churchyard, for fine views of the River Wye. Not much in the town to entertain you on a wet day: do you really want to visit a button museum?

Thrill seeking: lots of outdoor activities available. Hot air ballooning; kayaking; paintball; quad biking and various stuff to do with psycho quadrupeds aka horses. Travel a bit further into Mid Wales and there are rally schools and various off road biking things.

For little kids there are many open farms. My niece likes this one near Hereford http://www.courtfarmleisure.co.uk/shop_pyo.htm which has animals, pyo fruit & a play area.

Older kids might like the Big Pit museum at Blaenavon.

Bored now. If you have any specific requirements then ask and I'll try to help.

Jeez - One of my brothers actually lives in Ludlow :blast but to be honest I don't think he actually knows anywhere ( he used to be a house husband :mmmm)

Ross is a great place and handy as a from our last visit seems to be a good base to exlpore the area from. We have stayed at the hotel before - The Bridge - superb food (from it's own gargen which lead down to the river) and only 10 minutes walk to the town centre.
The road to Tintern (A466??) must be one of trhe best biking roads I've been on.

There's a much better road than the A466, should you be travelling from Monmouth to Chepstow. The B4293 via Trellech. The view from Lydart N51 47.196 W2 43.025 over Monmouth & the Wye Valley is stunning. At the other end, near Chepstow, take the side road out of Devauden at N51 40.920 W2 45.117, signposted Kilgwrrg Common http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&ie=UTF8&ll=51.673327,-2.764006&spn=0.017964,0.037422&z=15 for one of the best views in S Wales, across Wentwood to the Brecon Beacons.
