Who makes the 'best' engine crash bars/protection? I prefer the ones that include a bar or bars going rearwards over or around the cylinders (as opposed to the ones that are just a simple loop in front.) Prefer silver to black (like on adventurer) although I could always paint them myself....... If you've got a picture then please post it on the site.

Many thanks

Will

Hi there,
I put Hepco & becker bars on my 1150, which I think look great and seem to offer good protection all round. The only drawback is fitting them, or trying to fit them! I didn't have too much trouble myself, but I gave Andy Cam a hand with his, and it took two evenings to get them right, after stripping half the bolts!!
I went for the black finish myself, as it's probably the easiest to touch up when they get scuffed.
:)

I can't remember how much they were, something like £120 or £130.
I got them from SPC, but Andy Cam got his from Motobins and they were a fair bit cheaper.

motobins

Sorry to seem so helpless, but where abouts are Motobins, or do they have a website?

Motobins

They are in Lincolnshire address below or follow the link below.

I ordered a set of H&P engine bars last week via the motor bins site cost approx £95 arrived in 48 hours, My local BMW specialist James Sherlock fitted then for me in half an hour or £12.50. Not worth getting me spanners out for that.

Stumpy, £12.50 for fitting your engine bars is well cheap, I'm impressed. I fitted my own for fear of being charged a fortune!!
:D

£12.50 to fit is a bargain. It usually takes me 1/2 hour just to find the right size spanner!

I got my H&B bars from Motobins in May this year. They were having a "10% off everything" weekend. Worth a look to see if they're doing a similar offer in the near future.

The trick when fitting them yourself is not to remove more than 1 bolt from the rear subframe at any time. If you remove 2 or more bolts the subframe will move out of line with the holes and you'll have to jack it up into position to get everything to line up again.
Also, be prepared to enlarge the rear holes on the engine bars to get them to line up.

I went for the black ones as they are easiest to touch up when (not if!) you scuff them. A bit of black enamel paint and they look good as new. It would be harder to fix scratches on the chrome ones.

What I'd like to do next is fit something to protect the tank. The Adventure tank is wide and looks like it'll touch down if the bike rolls over the engine bars. Something like the tank/beak bar on Paul's picture. I may get someone to weld up a bit of bent tube for me, as a project for the winter.

Funny you should mention that but...

Adv crash bars to Standard...

does anyone know whether the Adv crash bars will fit the standard GS?

any idea about the price, ease of fitment?

cheers,
kaz:D

Standard GS 'bars won't fit the Adventure (different 'bash-plate), I don't know about the other way round...

The point may be moot - have you tried to get hold of Adventure 'bars? I've just had mine fitted, having specified them when I ordered my bike, delivered in March!

HB site...?

anyone got the link to Hepco Becker's website?

cheers,
kaz:p

Amen to that

I have a set of H&B and they are still not fitted because the spacers were to short - now the right length.
But now the bolts are too short - I am left with about 15mm of thread.

Hi Paul,
I have had acouple of goes at getting the L bracket over the ABS lines and have not succeeded as yet.
Any advice would be appreciated

Steve

What about Touratech

I've got standard Touratech bars on mine and have very carelessly lobbed it, massively heavily loaded, twice (on the same side). Engine casing is still unmarked and although the bars themselves are a little worse for wear they're still in one piece and would undoubtedly withstand another horizontal mission (although I have none planned). Easy to fit as well.

What's the problem Steve.... it only fits one correct way, or was I lucky?
