... It's taken me a long time to get to this site and I haven't even got a GS!
I live in Shepton Mallet, Somerset and have a 1979 R100T owned from new and a 2001 K1200LT bought from Williams in Manchester during 2002. Shortly after buying the K, I was invited for a Rideaway into Scotland with Williams and it was on that trip I was really introduced to what was a very capable & flexible GS1150 Adventure. One of the organisers (a no 'slim-Jim' with plate K15 MUD) rode to within an inch of it's life, in the wet, on tarmac, on knobblies! Brilliant!! I was hooked! Alas, having wife & loads of camping kit up to the gunnells at the time, the K's lack of ground clearance in the corners, made it showtime for whichever riders were following me!
I was introduced to BM's by a pal with a ('76) R90S at a time when I was a Rep and driving Ford Escorts doing over 40,000 miles a year. Can you imagine my amazement being pillion on one of these things?! I had to get one after taking the test. Passing it on a four-stroke 250 Yamaha, I immediately p/ex'd it for a BMW R800 and a year later, swapped that for the R100T (never did get the 90S). Did over 15k on the T in the first year (in addition to my work mileage), riding around the UK but it wasn't until the mid-eighties before I rode abroad (Sweden) and then on & on to all and varied including Hungary and north Africa with the FIM Rallies.
Time passes and life goes on and other hobbies take their toll. The T is coddled in the garage now, rarely ridden whilst the K is the primary source of two-wheeled excitement. I'd like an 1150 Adventure (being tall & stout!) being first motivated by K15 MUD & later the McGregor/Boorman series. It'll happen one day I suppose but meantime I'll just have to drool, reading sites like these!
