Well, as mentioned elsewhere, I bought AndyT's Husky 610E as both a green lane replacement for my DRZ and as a more competitive bike for Hill Climbing with the NHCA.

Details of the Husky HERE

Details of Hill Climbing on a DRZ HERE

Well, I've been loving the Husky ever since I got it. Initially I was worried that it wasn't gonna do the job I wanted but the more I ride it the more it really it seems a genuine dual (triple?) purpose bike; good on the road, good on the trail and hopefully good on the hills.

After much searching I was unable to find some 17" wheels for it so some brand new ones were ordered from Central Wheels. Yes, I could have got some 2nd hand wheels from another bike (as I've done in the past) and made up new spacers etc but, well, I decided to hang the expense and go for new shiny bling ones; blue and gold to go with the blue and yellow bike  :D

There has been MUCH tooing and throwing between Outtomunch and CW as they have never built a pair of SM wheels for the Husky before (that's a good sign :blast) and I have also spec'd a 5" rear rim in order to properly fit 165/170 race tyres - only thing being I'm not sure that a rear that fat will fit :eek Oh well, if it's tight I can always get the Stanley knife out on the edge of the tyre (I'm not joking :D).

Any way, the wheels eventually arrived today :JB:JB and here they are; pure SM porn as far as I'm concerned :drool

And all together now

The big deal now is 'will they fit' :nenau I do hope so. This weekend in well hectic so I'm not sure I'll get the chance to put it all together :(

Watch this space :)

Mate, those wheels look sweet. How much were they if you dont mind me asking. I want a new set of h/d wheels making up for my cr500 project.

CR500 SM :drool :thumb2

When the SM craze started I remember a lot of peeps used RGV250 wheels on CR's although, IMHO, cast wheels don't look right on a SM.

I got the wheels from Central Wheel Components HERE

I'm too embarrassed to say what I paid for them  but the price list HERE will give you an idea of how much new wheels will set you back.

Far better to adapt some 2nd hand ones unless you have more money than sense :mmmm

Andres

PS Don't forget to factor in discs, sprockets and chain - it all adds up!

That's cheating Mr Medic man :D

I finally got the time today to have a play and see if everything fits. TBH honest, I've been both dreading and looking forward to this......................because CW hadn't built a set of wheels for my bike before I'd had to give to give them every dimension and more; despite offering to bring the bike in they were adamant that they could build the wheels from what I'd provided..........................:eek

Well, the good news is almost...........everything fits which is a VERY pleasant surprise to say the least :JB there are just two problems, one simple to sort the other not quite so.

Firstly, they have supplied me with the wrong botls to attach the front disce to the hub. They need to be shouldered bolts and I've been sent ones suitable for a countersunk hole and are too short (they have actually sent me the standard Husky dirtb bike disc bolts)

Dischole.jpg

however, that's no big deal and easy to sort out :thumb2

The bigger problem is spacing out the front calliper in order to fit the 320mm disc.

CW weren't able to supply one so I ordered a spacing bracket form Husky Sport. It's the one that they use on the 610 SM so I assumed it would 'probably' work..........nil points, it didn't. Some further digging reveals that Husky use a different caliper on the SM version to that on the Dual Sport version so back to square one :blast

Some very preliminary digging this evening has thrown up a firm in Australia that looks like it can provide an off the shelf unit so that's a start.
I'll be speaking to them this week along with a few UK contacts I have - ideally what I need is a local engineering firm that can knock out something for me..................

So, some piccies;

I'm sure there's something missing

Why I don't need this one

So, next job is get the tyres on the wheels now I know they all fit - hopefully that'll get done tomorrow :)

After that, a spacer needs sorting and that's it - I've a hectic couple off weeks coming up now so nothing is gonna happen too soon :( but, watch this space, who knows :)

Just had a go at supermoto this weekend was great fun, now looking for a set of wheels for my KTM 400 exc.

Did your come with disks, sprocket and spacer for break caliper?

Cheers

Top fun innit:thumb2

The wheels were built to order so discs, sprockets spacers etc all had to be ordered separately.

You'll have no probs finding 2nd hand wheels (et al) on ebay for a KTM (check, but the different models should be pretty much interchangeable).

I've been a very busy boy but, at last, things are starting to happen.

I eventually had to go direct to Talon to sort out bolts for the front disc. They are distributors for Braking discs and were confused by my initial call saying that the countersunk screws would not fit the disc, they reckoned Braking discs had counterbored holes and countersunk holes and could understand why mine didn't.
Turns out CW had supplied a really old disc which was designed to be used with an old style Husky disc bolt which were now pretty much unobtainable. So, the disc was sent to Talon who bored the holes out to fit some 'normal' sized mushroom headed bolts and Bob's your uncle, sorted (at last!) :thumb2

Meanwhile the tyres were fitted and today I finally had time to fit everything :bounce1 The rear tyre has fitted without the need for a stanley knife and to my mind it all looks rather nice. I had been worried that the blue and gold wheels would look toooooo bling on the bike but, if I say so myself, I think they work really well :)

The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed something hanging from the l/h bar -this is the front brake caliper and, yes, I still don't have a caliper mounting spacer/bracket. The bike is begging to go for a spin on this lovely sunny Saturday and I can't, so frustrating :tears

It should however, be with me next week some time. The only problem being I'm away next weekend so even if it does arrive I won't have time to fit and ride the bike.................

At this rate I'll just about make the last hill climb of the season :mmmm

Andres

Andres,

have you spoken to Talon about your required front brake spacer??

nathan

yeah I have done. Just as CW have never made a set of wheels for my bike so Talon haven't made made a spacer for my bike ......... I managed to track down a bunch of guys that race Huskys in SM (Motosupplies) and can supply a spacer for me, just have to wait for them to make it.

Andres the bike looks really nice with those wheels on and I can't wait to hear how she handles. Is it a quick change to put the off road wheels back on or is this a one way job??

Do I see a Griso in your garage by the way:rolleyes: I like those:drool

Glad you like it Andy :) and yes, that is a Griso. I've always loved Guzzis and if I say so myself it's a gorgeous bike, actually goes and handles well too!

I still have the dirt wheels and the Husky will still be used predominantly for green laning.

To swap between the two wheel sets involves changing front brake pads, adding/removing the front caliper spacer, changing chains and obviously the wheels. A bit faffy but once used to 30/40 mins tops.

TBH Ive never understood why more peeps don't have a set of road wheels for their dirt bike. So easy to do ( can be cheap to do ) and adds an extra, top fun, dimension to the bike :thumb2

And I've never understood why peeps feel the need to throw Perfectly Good Motorcycles at Non Metalled Roads !! :augie :augie

That Husky IS looking good, though. I'll have to get along to a Hill Climb/Sprint to watch it in action :thumb2 .

I've got a set of SM wheels for my HP2 and never put them on yet but its something I really have to do this summer:augie

Excited of Nottingham here.............

It's arrived, at last :bounce1 :bounce1 :bounce1

It's been soooooo frustrating having the bike sat there 95% ready to go but, at last, my caliper spacing bracket has arrived :)

The bizarre thing is that Talon are adamant that they don't do a bracket for the Husky yet....................it's a Talon bracket  I'm guessing it must be for another bike with the same forks and Talon are unaware that it also fits mine :nenau

Any way, cheers Motosupplies, at last I can get the bike on the road/track.

It's a busy night tonight so it may have to wait until tomorrow to be fitted and road tested but, what ever, it'll be on the road for the weekend :thumb2

Well, I fitted the bracket and all looked good.................except the wheel would not now centre properly. So, looks like the wheel spacer supplied by Talon is to short grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :(

I've measured up and ordered the correct spacer from Talon but in the mean time, via a very convoluted route, a mate of a mate of a mate of mine machined up a spacer for me on Friday evening :)

A frustrating Saturday morning was spent doing chores and stuff that had to be done..................I just wanted to see if the spacer fitted and go out and play :bounce1

Any way, chores all done and some creative use of cable ties to help route brake lines and the front wheel was on and everything worked, yay!

I only managed a 20 mile run or so as I had to go back out but the bike feels dead promising already.

Steering seems very sharp indeed but she sits a bit low on the back so I'll need to drop the forks in the yokes, needless to say that'll speed the steering up further - should be interesting.
The bike sits pretty low so is very manageable, actually feels smaller and lighter than the DRZ did with 17" wheels and that was hardly a big bike - should make her nice and easy to throw around (drop ;)) on the hills.
The suspension is just a bit too soft on it's off road settings so that'll need firming up too.

Over all though I'm very pleased - the gearing seems spot on and whilst she's quite civilised on a gentle throttle if you want to be a hooligan just keep the throttle near the stop and she's a different bike. Bikes like this defo bring out the worst in one :green gri

Some gratuitious piccies of her inagural run

I now need to work out which of the remaining hill climbs I can make; so far looks like Wiscombe in Sept and Hartland Quay in October....................
