Was jawing to a couple of hofficers at the Bike Safe stand at the Bike Show today and I notice that my local force, West Mercia don't participate.

Anyone in the know (or otherwise) know Why??:nenau

It is is a really poor show by West Mercia.
The council have put on a annual event in worcester with the Fire service, and stands from Worcester Auto club plus others, and a lack of interest from WMPC.
I think it was down to management, great shame because the bike safe days are very good no matter how good we think we are.
What did you think of the bike show?

I've just sent a snotty e-mail/rant to them about it, be interesting to see if I get a reply!

Thought the show is losing its sparkle, getting smaller very year, and altho they pay their way, too many cheapjacks selling too much tat.:( You been?

Whereabouts in Worcs are you?

~I was yakking to the guys last year and as Bikesafe is a National scheme they have officers from all different forces to man the stand...there was Hampshire and Cheshire there last year.....I am back at the show on Friday and Saturday working, where is their stand i could do with winding them up again.

Cheers

I used to live in the West Mercia area, near Ross on Wye. I did Bikesafe with a mate from Pershore, with Gloucestershire, who are happy to take people from any county.

According to http://www.bikesafe.co.uk/ there are courses in Gloucester, Gwent, Edgbaston & Gaydon. All fairly close to the West Mercia area, so perhaps it is not economic to run a separate scheme in what is a sparsely populated region, relatively speaking.

I think that forces are all having to look very closely at costs and as with all things accounting the emphasis is very much on the short term.

To this end I believe that Strathclyde may be stopping the accompanied rides with uniformed officers on force machines and using IAM groups to do the observed runs. Even if this hasn't actually been implemented yet I know that it was being considered.

It's not been dropped as a cost-cutting exercise, AFAIK there's never been a Bikesafe course offered, certainly not in Salop anyway.

Had an e mail back from "Bob" at West Mercia Police, has forwarded my message to the "Driving School" for a reply.

Bikesafe

Si
There is no Bikesafe in West Mercia. The nearest is the Take Control programme which offers a day "skills enhancement" course with qualified instructors for £30. This is a collaboration between the County Councils and the Safer Roads Partnership. I plan to do one but have no idea what it is like. It can qualify you for the DSA Enhanced Rider Scheme insurance discount.

Personally I think West Mercia are nuts ( us inmates call it West Farcia ). A decent Bikesafe scheme might help to persuade some of our fellow bikers that wheelies into the front of oncoming traffic can be a bad idea!

Sorry to hear you are "incarcerated"!:comfort. Totally agree with you tho'.

Anyone else done the Take Control programme? If its any good £30 isn't too bad as most bikesafe courses are a similar price.:thumb

I've not done the take control course yet and I might well give it a go.

I first saw it mentioned in a 'think bike' leaflet that I picked up at the bike show where it is described as 'Flexible training from professional instructors...'

If it is indeed training then in theory it should be better than Bikesafe which was never intended to be training.

Take Control

I did the take control course in the West Mercia area, met the instructor called Tony in Tenbury Wells. I booked 2 courses but in the end my mate could not go so I still have a course in credit at £30 if anyone wants it. I checked with Tony today that I can sell it on so if anyone wants it then ring Tony of One2One training to arrange it and post me the fee. He is on 07946441465. Cheers.

Bikesafe

Hi guys...........

Dare I say it but I am a serving bike cop in the south and can only say I thnik it might have been West Mercia that got rid of all their bikes overnight.....it may have been another force but they had to draught in outside force riders to cover an escort of some description.
I know my force were looking at binning bike safe, of which I am an instructor, because the job doesnt get anything out of it in the way of figures............bloody infuriating I know................. out of all the courses/training that is available bikesafe is the best value for money and so many riders ask if they could pass the IAM course, having been observed by a class 1 rider usually we can say if someones ready for it or not.....the majority are and would pass easily.........

long live BIKESAFE:blagblah:ymca2

Northumbria have recently dome the same, and had to ask Durham to cover their escort.

Therein lies the problem, those who want to take further training, of whatever description, are normally not the riders who need it most.....
