That is cold! :eek
But it has been much colder before.

In this thread I'll try to tell you how cold it can be here in a normal winter, and how we handle the cold.

First todays news, in Norwegian, but you I'll try to translate for you.

Røros:
http://www.yr.no/nyheter/1.6933173
''It say Røros got -41c, the coldest since 1987, but that are no new record. The coldest was -50,3c.
The airplanes need help to start; they blow hot air on the engines to remove the ice. It is too cold to use the defrost machines...
They also mention that the cold does not feel like -41c because of the dry air - it feels more like ca.-20c, a lady at the airport say.''

Keep in mind the people at Røros often get very cold days, so they don't complain if it feels like -20c.

''Trondheim got -21,7c, and Namsskogan -35,6c last night.''

The meteograms show how cold they believe it is going to be, not how cold it was.
I find the info here, and it is in English, and not only for places in Norway. Try to write the name of where you are right now!

Water in the pips turn to ice.

The plumbers are busy in cold winters!

When water turn to ice it take 10% more room.
So when water in pipes turn to ice the pipe broke, and water get out.
http://www.aftenposten.no/bolig/article3449842.ece

How to prevent that?
Try to keep it warm in the rooms where there are pipes.
Do not forget the basement and where the pips get inside your house!
The snow help!
We get more trouble if we do not have the snow around the houses.

Bus and car; the battery does not like the cold.

News in English! :thumb2
http://www.norwaypost.no/content/view/23014/1/
Typical in Norway in cold days:
''Hi neighbour!
My battery is flat, and I have jump start cables.
-Can you drive your car over here? -You got time for it? Ah, good! :thumb2 ''
And the rescue car companies are busy.

Oil and water in the engines get thicker in cold temperatures + the batteries loose energy because of the cold = the car won't start.
But if we charge our battery, and have thin oil in the engine, we normally have no problem to start a car in -20c and even colder.

I stopped off in Rorus back in 1984 and it was minus 30 something then but as you say it didn't feel that cold as it was so dry. It was however nice and warm when I got back on the train for a cup of Norwegian Rails most wonderful hot chocolate and a Kvik Lunsj...heaven:comfort

I also stayen in a Hut in Finsa some years back and it was minus 18 with an outside loo.....

Cold

It was rather cold when I parked my F800GS after work yesterday too:

-29,5 celcius.
The coldest I have seen on the gauge so far.
