hi all,

my first post on the forum!
I have just purchased a 2002 suzuki drz -s with 13k miles on the clock
It has the e model carb fitted, e model downpipe and silencer and supermoto wheels with uprated front brake disc.

I have owned the bike 2 days but am gutted as i havent even rode it yet as the battery is dead due to the owner not using the bike for the last year! (we bumped it and he rode it for me to see all was ok before buying)
the last owner had the bike 3 years and only covered 1k miles.

my question is what maintenance should i do immediately?

I have obviously just invested in a battery which should be with me in the next 2 days!(cant wait)
next i was thinking oil and filter change.

Is there any preference of what oil to use and filter manufacturer?
i have read about the o-ring, does anyone know suppliers should it be missing?
Does anyone know a good online supplier for the oil/filter etc?

Should i bother changing the coolant? should i clean or change the air filter?

thanks all and hope to speak soon and learn loads!

Chris, Wemoto is a decent on-line parts supplier & Leisure Trail can supply loads of DRZ goodies including the o-ring, I assume you're refering to the spacer kit behind the g/box sprocket?

All you need to do now is post up a few photos. :beerjug:

Take a look here too, it's a wealth of DRZ information & all you ever wanted to know is there.

how do i add pics? it seems to want a url? cant i just upload off hardrive?

ok will have to look into it thanks.

Just wondering what oil you guys use?
is it 10/40 or 15/50.

do you use good branded oil and semi synthetic or fully?

do they stock oil online?

thanks for all replies!

photobucket dont work! if i emailed one of you guys a pic would you stick it up for me?

Hi Dude.
Nice bike.
Use photobucket and IMG link code under each image.
10/40 semi-synth. Full synth not recommended.
And your username covers one third of my fecking screen, so this may be the first and last time I have anything to do with you...... unless you sort it with Admin/Mods.:comfort

Timpo.:D

I've been Panzerphil, The Doctor & now The Beer Hunter.
I'm thinking of using philllanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochdrz next year.

Problem is.co.uk you don't subscribe so we can't PM you. No-one wants to post up an e-mail address for the robots to pick-up on.

ha ha thanks all for your advice/replies,

what i need to know now is what brand of oil to get?
and what filter? are they any better if you pay the extra for named makes?

what about the air filter and coolant?
ok to just leave it and run the bike?

Did you get a user's manual with it 'cos there's a black art to checking the oil level.
I think the key is regular oil & filter changes rather than focusing on specific brands.
The air filter can be cleaned & oiled then re-used.
Coolant can be tested & replaced if past it's best. Try Halfords for a specific gravity tester, I got one for 99p & is just a pipet with a red ball in it. If the ball floats it's fine, sinks & it's weak.

Nice looking bike, you need to get some moto x wheels & tyres for it, the oil I use is Castrol GPS 10W40 Semi synthetic. Oil filters you will get from most Moto x bike shop thay are chep as chips. The air filter after time cleaning and the like gets tatty fit Twin Air make thay are better. You need to check that the output seal and spacer have been changed for a stanles steel one thay have the habit of rust building on the spacer and ripping the seal out. Not very good if you are out on the plains away from civlisation thay dump there oil quick!

Chris,

Invest £24 quid ( best £24 you'll ever spend) in a Clymer manual for your bike and then sit down and have a read.

It will ;
1)answer most of your questions
2)give you service schedules
3)tell you how to complete the tasks of which you speak with piccies and everyfink
4)have loads of nerdy stuff like torque settings
5) list what garage workshop bling you need to maintain your bike
