Hiya All, Do all F650 GS single cylinder beemers rattle like mad from idle, Sounds like a timing chain rattle, I have replaced the tesioner and no difference.

Is is normal, Do all single cylinder beemers sound like tractors ?

Mines a 2004 Dakar version with 19k on the clock,

Both 650 engines I have here are quiet, no cam cnain noise.
You could be requiring a new chain. Has the bike been revved high, this can lead to premature chain wear/filure.

They should sound as quiet as a sowing machine, did you fit the newer type of cam chain adjuster?

Hiya, I fitted the new one piece tensioner, At 19000 miles I was hoping the timing chain should be ok, I measured the tensioner throw-out which was 6mm, I understand that 9mm is the max acceptable, I have been on YouTube web site and heard a few GS's idling and not sure now, Most sounded rattlely,
I Found this web link on You Tube and the engine ( not exhaust ) sounds the same as mine, Is this normal ?

Mine's an F650GS but it does sound something like the u-tube bike. No other bike has sounded like it.

I think you are being paranoid!!:comfort

Best wishes,

RobA

Hello, I think your right, I have only owned the bike a couple of months, i have not owned a beemer or a cylinder cylinder bike before ( Hmm maybe over 20 years ago when i was a learner on a Honda 125 XL) I would love to hear another GS to confirm all ok, Will keep an eye out at my local dealers for any used models i can test ride,
Will keep a look out also for any bike group meetings in the north London area also for Beemer GS bikes

Sounds like mine, which incidentally sounds good to me!

The last one i had sounded like this as well....:augie

I have to mention that the tensioner I replaced has made a very slight difference to the rattling at idle, I suppose the tensioner has pressurised internally with oil by now, The Beemer single cylinder engines are a bit un-refined compared with muti-cylinder bikes, The singles do sound a bit clunky & rattley, Which I will have to get used to, Other than that I enjoy the bike and still look forward to riding it when I can. Great torque rev range,

Is there any BMW bikers get together days in the North London/ Herts /Essex areas ? Would be nice to compare and chat bikes,

Best way to find out if yours is running correctly, is to pop along to your local BMW dealer and ask them to have a listen. Easy :D

I have heard a few idling on the YouTube web site, Had the speakers on full and yes and they do sound similar my to bike, :JB

Hello All, Took the bike down to a very good BMW specialist in south London last week Saturday to check my bike and hopefully for peace of mind, Luckily for me he had another F650 GS twin spark, And :beerjug: Yes it sounded the same, Compared to other bikes, especially Jap bikes, BMW singles are a noisy unrefined tappity/clunky sounding engines,:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah, Suppose I will get used to it now, Will buy an I-Pod :augie

hi andy
you can prefill the tensioner then fit and adjust b4 you run the bike

takes the rattle out on start up ,but yes a very noisy engine:blast

Takes some getting use to after owning Jap bikes, But Love the bike to bits, Could not go Jap again, :ronno Wife knows when I am home from the clunky gearbox and the engine with mables inside sound,
