Why shouldn't I dump half the exhaust?

How is it?

Quick question - is there any good reason why I shouldn't dump the right hand can on my Dakar? After-market Lasers are BM recommended and just bolt right on, so there should be no problems with lambda sensors etc, right? Less weight, more noise, no problem, or am I missing something?

Cheers, Dan Walsh

Dunno. But I am Dan Walsh. And I am in Peru. And I am just about to dump half my exhaust.

Ahh, you're that Dan Walsh! Hope you get a sensible answer. Hope the journey goes well.:beerjug:

Ta. Gonna go a whole lot better now I've got some bearings in the back wheel. That's front wheel, back wheel and head race bearings all collapsed within the last 8 months. Shocking. If I wasn't on the PanAmericana, yards from the Pacific Ocean and minutes from desert trails, I'd be angry. Arf.

And I'm Dan Walsh!

In all honesty , being as it's sunday night in Yuroop, I guess everyone is watching Big Brother, or The Good Life.

I'm sure someone technically minded will be along in a while .....

Dan...there's more information than you could shake a big book of information at on the F650 site...........

It has other uses...

This is Lisa Thomas' TT39 F650 and her 'stash' compartment. I also still have ringing in my ear from Casey's staintune zorst on his Dakar so yes you can ditch and win :thumb

I think Dans talking about losing just one side of the standard BMW twin exhaust, not replacing it with a single sided one - right Dan?

I think starting the bike up has the rhs can do something, not sure. Bill (Fanums) recomendation of the Chain Gain site is probably your best bet. Might need to post the question. Failing that, AdvRider may also be able to help - quite a few guys with Dakars on there too (link here)

If you're just referring to losing the right-hand can of the existing system, the twin-pipe unit is a complete welded unit, so you'd need it cut and patched at the cross-over pipe, then you'd need to open up the pea-shooter hole iin the left hand pipe to allow all the gases to escape from the left-hand pipe.

It is possible (although frustrating and difficult) to remove the innards of the pipe as well, to make it freer-flowing, so it would be much simple to 'acquire' a simple slip-on pipe like Paul Waterfield's previous Dakar with a "Staintune" pipe pictured here below.

No problem at all. The fuel-injection systems takes care of any back-pressure changes, so no re-jetting required.

Dan,
left hand 'silencer' houses the CAT and the right hand silencer is the silencer.
The two are connected by a push fit crossover pipe.
There should be no problems running without the silencer. Except:
i) will the CAT on its own offer enough back pressure?
ii) it'll get awful hot under the back where the exhaust will exit (lots of plastic to melt under there!)
iii) it'll be noisy;)

Good luck.........

Thanks for the advice. I dumped the pipe, got a headache from the noise, and put it back on. Which I guess means that I'm old. I might try removing some of the baffling if I get close to a decent welding shop. Until then, it can keep strumming quietly.

Thanks again, Dan

Ditch it, your supossed to be a 'Pikey Layabout on a scruffy Motorcycle" not a 'Gypsy Prince on a Shimmering Stallion'

:)

Motomartin - No email. Or I dumped it by mistake. Try again - my surname at ekno dot com.

Judge - stash compartment looks er suspiciously useful.

Whatton - arf!

Cheers, Dan
