now then

it seems when it comes to bikes i can't decide what to get to suit my needs
So far i've owned - 2 R6's, an 800gs and 2 450 enduros - currently got the wr450 up for sale!

Anyway i'm looking for a bike that -
i can get on for an hours or so ride on a nice night after work
i can load up and go on a weekend trip
i can still greenlane on
will sit on the road at 75/80mph comfortably over distance
& i will be doing an offroad trip to portugal on it this year

The bike i'm looking at now is a KTM 950 Super Enduro R, though i've not ridden one, BUT will this cope with road miles or am i best going back to the 800gs?? (though the gs wasn't the best trail bike)

haven't got the space or the MRS to allow for 2 bikes!

cheers

Fantastic bikes and very underrated by all that have never owned one, mine on a trip across Spain to a well know North African destination - :bounce1

What size panniers did you go for? I have the KTM soft panniers on at the moment, but long term would like to get something a bit more secure.

Hi Mate, at the time I could only get the 31Ltr Zega Pros, and to be honest these are more than enough - :thumb

They look good, the size suits the bike, I actually thought they were smaller than that, perhaps 29 litre which is the size I was thinking of getting.

The 950SE is a lovely bike to ride on the road, You will get about 100 miles for a standard tank but if you fit a safari tank you should get 250 miles the down side is the bike is big to start with so fitting one of these bigger tanks will make it bigger and heavier so it will lose some of its off road capability

Here's a link to my build ;) http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233472

you don't have to go orange :thumb

Best bike in the world.

As others have said,it does need a bit of modifying-big tank, pannier rails, possibly better seat etc etc,but when done is amazing.

The only reason I have a GS is that I can't take the wife on the back of the SE AND carry much luggage.

A pair from a 950 SE will do just fine sir!

SE's Q's.

> Anyway i'm looking for a bike that -
> i can get on for an hours or so ride on a nice night after work

yup - spot on.

> i can load up and go on a weekend trip

yes, but add some Wolfman pannier racks to help with tie downs/poor man's sub frame strengthening

> i can still greenlane on

Oh yes!

> will sit on the road at 75/80mph comfortably over distance

yes with a small screen Puig/690 enduro

> & i will be doing an offroad trip to portugal on it this year

it'll be fine :) 250's are a bit too small for that trip if it's the n -> S I've sent to a bunch of people.

I think it's one of those bike's that everyone should have once in their lives - those that always go with the safe/dull option are definitely missing out. I went out last night because it was lowish on petrol, and I hadn't ridden it for a week or two and just riding it a couple of miles to the station made me feel good.
cheers

Rode my SE for first time in ages today.

It really is amazing.

It just puts a smile on your face.

Like chalk and cheese to my 1150 GSA.

now then

reviving an old thread!!
last time i didn't do anything about buying an SE, i did a few enduro races.
BUT once again it's buying a bike time & it comes down to 1200gsa or an SE.

I've ridden a GSA and know there really good on road, cruise nicely, and the wife loved going out on it. I also had it off road & it wasn't bad BUT i've still not ridden an SE.

I'm looking to do the same riding as before, trips to wales, scotland, Europe possibly be doing the BBRC next year & a few rounds of this year if i get a bike in time.
BUT mainly be day trips in the dales & the odd hour blast on the way home some nights!!

So as these bikes are close to each other, which do i go for???

Thanks - Again

I'm sorry but I don't think a 1200 Adventure and a 950 SE are close to each other. The GS is a mile munching tourer with a little off-road capability (if you are pretty good at riding off-road), the SE is much better off-road, but in standard form is not a long distance bike. As I said before the SE needs work to make long distance bearable, but to me it is worth it. I have just got back from a trip to the Harz mountains in Germany this weekend on the SE. Harz is 400 miles from Hook of Holland, which I rode in one (long) day, played around on the twisty roads for 3 days and then rode back again. Our bunk house also happened to be at the end of a mile of gravel tracks :D

When I got back I had the same feeling I always have when I go on a trip on this bike........I don't think I will ever sell it.

I still need to do some more work on it though, I'd really like a new seat rather than using the airhawk and it could really do with a centre stand.

Sorry, what i meant is there both close together regarding my needs, just struggling to figure out which i'd do more of.

I'll be riding a few of the BBRC events this year & next, so think i'll go with the SE!
I'll let you know when i find one

Thanks very much & very nice bike!

which is easier to pick up on your own? The GS as its got the pots but will the covers be smashed in over time? mmmmm

690 enduro R maybe as a rider only toy?

There are a couple of them on ebay at the moment, one is good value with a fairly high mileage and the other is highly modded (also for sale on here) but highly priced as well.
