Hi,

I have done a search but could not find anything so.

Does anyone have list of the old East / West German Border crossings, either as waypoints which would be great, if not just a list of crossing points that I can transfer into waypoints.

cheers,

Don.

Thanks for that, need to look at the link in detail but it looks like the sort of thing I was after.

thanks again,

Don.

When we started planning our Moscow trip, we had a conversation with a friend who has travelled extensively in Eastern Europe. He said that a lot of the old border crossings have deliberately retained a certain "communist era atmosphere" (charmless buildings, dodgy cafes, rude staff ...) for tourism purposes. We are passing by the Check Point Alpha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmstedt%E2%80%93Marienborn_border_crossing) Museum at Helmstedt.

Hi. I lived in West Berlin for several years in the seventies and travelled two of the three of the transit routes regularly namely towards Helmstedt and Hof. You can still (possibly!) spot the old border because (I think), the "State" borders (i.e. borders between Laender) seem to roughly follow the East German names (Thuringia, Mecklenburg etc.) i.e. an old East German "Land" will border an old West German "Land" IYSWIM...then just look at the major roads crossing.

This positions the Helmstedt transit crossing here: http://goo.gl/maps/8HmH i.e. they seem to have built a Motorway service station at the site and possibly above mentioned Museum. From memory, the "Hof" transit route crossed the border about here: http://goo.gl/maps/d5TI but there seems to be no sign of the crossing so I'm far from 100% on this.

If I had to guess (never travelled it), the third Berlin transit route (which went towards Hamburg) is around here: http://goo.gl/maps/Q9Mz This is arrived at by following the main road route across what is probably the old East/ West state/Land border.
