Off Road Capabilities

Not being a true off-roader, I can't personally comment on the R1200GS ability but in response to some negatives I have read on this site, you may be interested in an article in the July-August issue of Sidetrack, an Australian offroad motorcycle magazine. A contributor took his GS on the Canning Stock Route, 1500kms of some of the nastiest track you are likely to find anywhere. Due to the lack of civilization in that part of the world, they had to carry enough fuel for 900kms. But these weren't touring miles, this was in country where in a 10 hour day, they sometimes only managed about 170kms. Slow grinding through sand hills, mud, soak holes, bogs, low scrub, etc. To carry enough fuel, water, and other supplies, the total load was about 160kgs. There were high speed sections as well.
As per the report, "nothing on the bike broke or worked loose .... they build those BM's unbelievably tough".
So for any who are in two minds on this issue, there are people out there doing tough miles on the 1200GS. No doubt some will have troubles, but that's true of all motorcycles.
