How many other people are getting their Classics ready for the summer?
After failing to make it as a lorry driver and having no work until the end of next month I seem to have spent a lot of time working in the garage this month.

My S7 hasn't been running well and BarryG came over and helped sort out the problems. I fitted a new Stewarts Enginineering breather pipe on the rocker cover which directs any oil and mist to sump level rather than down the front of the engine.
The spark was weak and inconsistent so we tried a new coil and condensor but it turns out both plug caps and the coil had failed. I had intended to take the engine out and clean all the casings but I have 2 other bikes to sort so that will probably be next winter's project, I just settled on a good clean and polish. It's running like a dream now. Roll on warmer weather and a bit of rain to clear the roads of salt so I can get a few miles under the wheels. It is the 50th anniversary of the Sunbeam Owners Fellowship and I hope to get along to one or two of their rallies this summer.
The S7 isn't a fast bike but it can bimble a long way in comfort. I have always preferred getting on M/Cs and travelling a long way rather than trying to wheelie or get my knee down so the S7 suits me.

I am also sorting a 1962 R60/2 Another acquaintance is a Rolls Royce trained engineer and he is lining the bikes tank with POR15 which seems really good stuff. Doug, down at Devon Rims also served his time at Rolls Royce and he will rebuild the wheels and fit stainless spokes. I will get the paintwork done and pinstriped, some chrome needs doing and fit a single seat for the bobber look.

And finally I got this off Lord Snooty's friend who had this R27 in his family since the sixties but it has been laid up since 1995. I have cleaned everything, changed all the oils, fitted a new carb, sent a wheel off to have the brake hubb relined (which is a specialist job) and now I am just waiting for the tank to come back from being POR15ed. The old fuel had started to return to crude oil and coated everything.

What have you done or doing to your Classic this winter?

I bought a Honda CB450 K0 Black Bomber just over a year ago and I've slowly been reburbishing it ready for rebuilding. All the paintwork's now been done, most of the chroming, the engine has been stripped, vapour blasted and is almost re-assembled. Carbs have been cleaned and sorted. Just got to sort out the wheel rims. I've got the original one's but they want over £500 to rechrome them!

I hope to be in a position to start the rebuild very soon. Having broken my left thumb last January and then fracturing my right wrist in November I haven't been in much of a position to really get on with it.

I'll take some photo's of the present state of it soon but, in the meantime, this is what some of it looked like.

I forgot to add that this will be the second Black Bomber that I've done.

Here's my last one. I learned a lot about them doing this one and hopefully the next one will be even better!

I need to fit new silencers to this one and I'll probably sell him once the next one is finished.

I know it looks fairly clean but I can assure you that it is ridden, not hidden! :D

Apart from the make, I don't even know what bike this is, but I must admit, I do like it :thumb2

It's sort of right....'balanced', in proportion.......I don't know :nenau, but it looks good :beerjug:

I like all of them but it's the S7 that I'd most want to own.

Great thread. :thumb2 More please.

Fanum, it's 1965 Honda CB450K0 "Black Bomber". It rocked the British bike industry on it's heels when introduced. DOHC, torsion bars to close the valves (no ordinary valve springs here), twin CV carbs (I think this was a first on a production bike), forged pistons (not cast), twin leading shoe front brake. It produces 43 bhp and revs to 9,500 rpm! Remember this was 1965. It was banned from racing because the powers that be did not believe the engine was mass produced and that Honda must have blue printed every one! When it was finally allowed it won it's class at the TT for several years.

It's really tiny and steers beautifully. Next time you are visiting your parents get in touch and I may let you have a go.

Andy

PS I love those three bikes of Devon's. :drool

Looking forward to seeing the pile of CB450 bits assembled and running :thumb

I guess most people remember the CB750 in 1969 as Honda's master piece but the 1965 CB450 was Honda's first 'big' bike and the start of 20 years of amazing M/C design for Honda before they ran out of ideas (imho).

I've always wanted a black bomber. I had a 1970 k1 250 when I was a teenager so the bigger Honda twins always seemed the next step. I got into Brit bikes though and never had another Honda twin.

I'd hardly call it a classic bike, but got this sitting on the bench, been there for longer than just this winter though, no hurry :)

* Fixed it for you :D
