How many other people are getting their Classics ready for the summer?
After failing to make it as a lorry driver and having no work until the end of next month I seem to have spent a lot of time working in the garage this month.
My S7 hasn't been running well and BarryG came over and helped sort out the problems. I fitted a new Stewarts Enginineering breather pipe on the rocker cover which directs any oil and mist to sump level rather than down the front of the engine.
The spark was weak and inconsistent so we tried a new coil and condensor but it turns out both plug caps and the coil had failed. I had intended to take the engine out and clean all the casings but I have 2 other bikes to sort so that will probably be next winter's project, I just settled on a good clean and polish. It's running like a dream now. Roll on warmer weather and a bit of rain to clear the roads of salt so I can get a few miles under the wheels. It is the 50th anniversary of the Sunbeam Owners Fellowship and I hope to get along to one or two of their rallies this summer.
The S7 isn't a fast bike but it can bimble a long way in comfort. I have always preferred getting on M/Cs and travelling a long way rather than trying to wheelie or get my knee down so the S7 suits me.
I am also sorting a 1962 R60/2 Another acquaintance is a Rolls Royce trained engineer and he is lining the bikes tank with POR15 which seems really good stuff. Doug, down at Devon Rims also served his time at Rolls Royce and he will rebuild the wheels and fit stainless spokes. I will get the paintwork done and pinstriped, some chrome needs doing and fit a single seat for the bobber look.
And finally I got this off Lord Snooty's friend who had this R27 in his family since the sixties but it has been laid up since 1995. I have cleaned everything, changed all the oils, fitted a new carb, sent a wheel off to have the brake hubb relined (which is a specialist job) and now I am just waiting for the tank to come back from being POR15ed. The old fuel had started to return to crude oil and coated everything.
What have you done or doing to your Classic this winter?
