I'm supposed to have tapered bearings - if so - how are they adjusted

Also - can i just put normal ball roller brngs in ?

Yours is a 96? If so, yes you have Timkin Taper Bearings... You can repack them easy enough, just need new dust seals, the "adjustment" is achieved by torquing the rear wheel axle to the correct torque. ( I can check my manual for the value if you don't have it) as far as I am aware you cannot replace with sealed bearings...

If they do need replacing the only hard part of the job is getting the race out the wheel, my independent has a special tool and a fly press for the job....

Front 68nm
Rear 81-88nm

According to the factory manual, you can buy spacers to adjust end play....

Race removal tool HD P/N HD-33071

Its worth cleaning and regreasing the early bearings regularly say once a year or at a tyre change.
There should be play. End float is 4-6 thou when torqued up.
It can get expensive, possibly dangerous and definately inconvenient if they fail. :)
