Not sure if this is a common problem but garmin express was saying that my maps were up to date on both computer and nav 5 but each time I transferred a route there was a discrepancy in the mapping.
Now my computer had 2014 mapping and nav had 2015.10 and as said garmin express was reporting map page foe both to be up to date.

So I reinstalled maps on computer and behold now have 2015.1
So why did garmin express claim they were all up to date when they clearly were not

2 different maps software, the 2015.10 is the Unicode version. The 2014.40 version is up to date for for UK users.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion. I have just had our car device replaced, plugged the new one in and Garmin Express tells me that the latest map is 2015. No mention of leaving you poor souls in England behind with 2014 mapping. We have had several guests through who have updated to 2015. Nobody has mentioned any reference to a UK only version.

New device maps updated to 2015 version in 18 mins, then got a message to say the maps on the PC are up to date, they too are 2015 and were updated a couple of months ago.

There are 2 map versions available NT & NTU.

The NTU version uses Unicode to encode names because many European languages require that so users can see/search names in their native language.

Seems odd that they have 2 map versions when they could get away with one.

If your internet servers are based outside the UK you will be offered the NTU version or thats the way it seems to work.

Very strange, I suspect that, being American, Garmin can't quite believe that people would want to travel to such dangerous places as those with odd names made up of strange letters.

However this explanation does not account for all those Brits who have downloaded the 2015 version. I don't think they were offered a choice of maps. They just checked for any updates and the 2015 version was downloaded.

Garmin is now a Swiss company. As said in my last post if bods UK broadband servers are not based in the UK they may be offered the NTU version.

One bod on here from London downloaded the NTU 2015.10 version. When he checked his broadband server he found it was Polish based. The Garmin server then believes that's where you reside.

When I use google on my works PC It shows German ads due to having German servers as expected as it's a German company.

The point i was trying to make was that the map update garmin express did on the Nav 5 unit was the 2015.10 version whereas the 2014 maps were indicated as up to date on the computer it was only when i did a reinstall on the computer that i got 2015.10 on base camp!

if you have 2014... on base camp (shown as up to date) and transfer a route to a Nav 5 the nav 5 re calculates for the mappage discrepency and can in some instances change the route from how it was intended

Looking at the zumo forum it does appear that older units I.e 660's are using NT and the 590/nav5 are using the ntu regardless of location. Hence why different units appear to have different mapping, NT will only be updated twice a year so next update will be 2015.2.

So maybe your basecamp thought that it was still talking to an older unit hence the need to reinstall the software

Swiss for tax reasons? That wont change their ethos. Still makes no sense to have to have two versions. If the 2015 version copes with local spellings then surely that would benefit anyone traveling to those places. It makes sense for the map to display names as they are likely to appear on road signs, that might actually be useful. Still I have long since given up expecting Garmin to do something sensible.

I have no desire to use Russian, Greek, Polish, or Latvian etc Cyrillic keyboards.

And you have to put up with stupidity such as the fact that when I plugged in my new device and wanted to update maps the Garmin site tells me I must download Garmin Express despite the fact that I downloaded it before. It would appear that it is put into a file that the Garmin site can't then see. But I persist with Garmin because they are far better for my use than TomTom. It is just a bit sad that the later devices take one step forward and two back. My old 2610 with openstreetmaps is a better basic navigation device for the bike than the latest Nav V

Nothing unusual about companies being registered in Switzerland for business reasons, quite removed from whether Brixen is spelt 'Brixen' or 'Bressanone'.

On that I do agree the 660 was an easier beastie to master

Nor do I and despite having the 2015 mapping I don't need to. All I have is a slightly more up to date map than those of you with the 2014 version.

Forgot to say that one reason you get German ads may be nothing to do with the supposed location of the server. If a lot of the traffic is in German, and I would think a German company might use German a bit then Goggle et. al. will pick up on this and deliver material in that language. We get this on our business laptops Even if we are in the UK using someone else's wi fi the ads come up in German -or would if most were not blocked.

BBC & ITV I players also don't work & the message you get is these players are not available outside the UK. We do use a German server

I didn't say otherwise. Having re read my post it does sound as if I might be doubting the location of your server, that was not my intention and I apologise for any misunderstanding I was just pointing out that the adverts they push at us are due to content as well as location. I doubt though, that all those guests who have downloaded the 2015 maps are working through overseas servers. They too would get error messages with the I players etc. There must be another explanation for this, the 2015 maps are different (at least in a few areas I have checked) so it can't just be an issue of compatibility with different alphabets.

Yes there is just read my earlier post and all is explained without all this location of server nonsense

But have John's guests been offered 2015 NTU maps with GE with a 550/660 or are they all Nav V / 590 users?

If your theory is correct there will be no 550/660 units with 2015 NTU maps
