Does anyone know first hand whether the Chambon Tunnel between Alpe d'Huez and Briancon is open or not? It was closed due to a major landslide but I'm having trouble confirming if it's now open or not.

cheers,

Donnie

Right. Closed until summer 2016, so if you're heading this way, it's a 60 mile detour!

Still shut. Date of re-opening uncertain at best. They're talking about putting a single track road round the other side of the lake at a cost of 7 million euro at the moment. On the tunnel side they're just waiting for the mountain to come down and take the tunnel with it.

Locals are being ferried across the lake in a Zodiac:eek:

Detour is fun but takes not far short of 3 hours!

Yes, there's a dirt track there now but police apparently guarding it due to fears of the mountain the tunnel passes through sliding into the lake, causing a tidal wave and wiping out the other side of the lake, ie: where the track is. It seems unlikely for anything much to change until things have stabilised.

Very welcomed and expected detour on our recent trip, took us on a lovely route to Huez that we wouldnt usually have taken! Hotel staff up in the resort said the closure was harming their business...
