Now before you all start

Bike has done 3500 miles in as little wet weather as possible and been played up all winter.

I am anal about the chain and lube it without fail after every ride and clean it thoroughly every 300 or so miles. There are people on here who will attest to my anality with the bloody thing. It needs no adjustment and has no tight spots which shows how it has been coddled. I actually like doing it so it has been no hardship pampering the bloody thing

I am very disappointed that rust is appearing on the link sides and tops !

My only conclusion is that the quality of the OE chain is piss poor.

I am tempted to call the dealer and see what they have to say but probably won't as no doubt it will be classed as a service item

Any way I am cross as rust never sleeps

I had some rust spots on mine over the winter, but a stiff wire brush and paraffin got rid of them.

Yep I scrubbed mine off but they returned and have continued to do so

Done it all again tonight as i did last week and the week before

Cheap bit of crap IMO as I doubt a DID chain would do it

Playing up is the cause. Seriously is it surface rust like on a disc? Or a deeper rust that has eaten into the metal itself? After some issues with chain both o/e and replacement I put A DID chain on my F800. No more problems. I had a scottoiler and would paint on gear oil every so often. I had it for about 25,000 miles in ALL weathers and it was still going strong when I sold it. JJH

It started as surface but is gradually getting deeper it really does look a bollocks and it is embarrassing when you maintain the thing like i do as it looks like a neglected piece of rat bike

I've never, or hardly ever ever cleaned a chain, just keep it well lubed (Pharr) , usually after a ride (Pharr Pharr) when the chain is still warm.

I don't think the quality on the XR is anything special so it wouldn't surprise me if its crap.

What did the wire brush do to the O-rings....? :augie

Dunno. Don't care.:p

I'll be changing the chain once Rick does all the research and tells me which one I need!:beerjug::D

Rick
A stiff nail brush will also damage the 'O' rings, both Micky and I have had this problem and have both come to the conclusion that this with damaged DID 'O' rings. I have found that one of the best ways to clean the chain is to use a bit of diesel applied with a soft paint brush. Then give it a good wipe clean with a cloth and apply chain lube in the normal way.

Yup ... even them thar Oxford chain brushes, shaped like the letter U, made for the job, rip the 'O' rings to shreds, so feck knows what a wire brush would do :blast

Yep I clean the chain with a soft paintbrush and paraffin then spend ages with a cloth getting all the paraffin and crap off. I only used the nail brush on the sides of the links to get the rust off but seem to have failed

It has really pissed me off as i do genuinely pamper the chain

The OE chains on the 800 twins are pretty crap so quite likely the same on the XR.

Do you remember the other thread where you told me how you clean your chain?

I remember thinking at the time that doing it that way would result in the side plates having no oil on them and that they may rust?

I have actually started cleaning my chains for the first time ever as a result but once cleaned I wipe a chain oil soaked cloth all over the chain and then apply a gel lube to the rollers. Seems to work so far as the OE KTM chain looks as good as new.

Do you think that might be it or is it just a cheap chain?

Andres

Further to my post above ... I clean my chain with a soft paint brush cut down (the bristles not the bloody handle) to make them a little stiffer but NOT sharper, and paraffin. Then I hose the grunge off and repeat until clean. Thoroughly dry with a soft cloth. Old T shirts cut up are ideal for this, JUST used the remains of my prized Dire Straits T shirt (given to me by Mark Knopfler) t'other day :rob

Then spray with a good chain grease/wax making sure that the side links (both sides) are covered :thumb

I recently recommended Castrol OR spray, but have been given a can of Wurth Dry chain spray to test .... and it's about as good as it can get :thumb

OH .... and OEM chains will rust, the inside rollers might be good quality but the side links are shit. Not had a problem with a DID rusting at all, even through winter use ;)

I use old tooth brushes and paraffin .... :)

My chain has rust spots on it too .... Nothing i'm overly worried about, as and when the time comes I'll replace it with a nice gold DID chain ...

So, even with a scotoiler it'll rust?

I might have to look into one of these DID chains. Anyone know which one the XR will take?
Do they do a red one?:D

I always make sure that all the chain is lubed after the clean !

I have never seen this before on bikes i have had with chains so i genuinely think its a crap chain

That isn't fair as no stretching or tight spots so the chain must be half decent i think that its built to a price though and the side plates are badly plated or just cheaper than they ought to be
