Me and a few mates are coming over for the Cookstown road racing on Saturday 30th April. The plan is that we will get into Belfast on the overnight boat from Liverpool on Saturday Morning, ride to Cookstown, watch the racing and return to Belfast for the overnight boat on Saturday night.

All a bit hectic but we wanted to get Cookstown in this year and this suited as no one loses time off work.

Anyway, what we want to know is some recommendations on a good greasy spoon for breakfast on the way from Belfast to Cookstown. We are planning to go round the top of Lough Neagh. Also we will need to find someplace for dinner on the way back and rather than take pot luck we thought we would ask you guys that know.

We would also be grateful if you could have a word with the rain gods as we got well and truly drenched last year coming back from Armoy.

Cheers

Tom

Breakfast I'd suggest Peggy's Diner 177a Moneynick Road, Toome BT41 3QZ, 4 or 5 miles from the end of the M2 motorway and about 25 miles from Belfast, it's beside a Go petrol station. Real greasy spoon but they do a good Ulster Fry.

If you come back from Cookstown via Stewartstown, try the Cohannon Inn 212 Ballynakilly Road Dungannon BT71 6HJ for dinner. It's also signposted as Services off the M1 motorway Jct 14.

The M1/Belfast Westlink will also take you straight back to the ferry, well signposted on the Westlink.

Can't make any promises about the weather but the forecast for Saturday looks OK :thumb

I can't add anything to Shucks suggestion, but just to say that you missed a fantastic day at Tandragee yesterday. Great weather and very fast racing. Hope you get a great day at Cookstown. :thumb2

great to see the road racing scene doing so well up north, hoping to spin up to the NW200 next month, great day out

Now forecasting occasional showers for Saturday, but it's a week away, could either be blistering hot or snowing :D

Recommend that you come back via B520 from the Sandholes Roundabout on the Dungannon Road, it will take you through Tullyhogue into Stewartstown which was part of the old Sherrygroom circuit where the races used to be held and was a far better track than the present Orritor one. Remember seeing Joey and Phil McCallen there, astounding!

Hope you have a great trip :thumb

Peggys used to be good. Better going on up to mals just past the elk nightclub.

Right enough, looks like Peggy's might be closed. There's always the Applegreen services off the M2 before Templepatrick. I've only been in for coffee and buns and it was Ok. Seems to get reasonable reviews on TripAdvsor

As you're getting off the ferry around 6am, if it's on time, then there wouldn't be many places open at that time, the Applegreen service area on the M2 about 5 miles from the ferry, as mentioned by Shuck Raider, would be a good stop for some munchies.

For a meal later on why not try the Braeside Inn which is at the start / finish line in the paddock, it will allow the traffic and the police time to go away, there is also a shop which does all the usual fried heart attack in a box type of food.

Phil.

Well we a great time going to Cookstown. Weather stayed dry and the racing was great. As recommended we stopped the Applegreen services on the M2 for breakfast which was really good and cheap too. Don't think about UK mainland services, this place is much better.
Right then, time to book some more trips.

Glad you had a good trip :thumb2 BBC1 Northern Ireland are showing highlights of Cookstown on Sunday 8th May, if you have Sky you can get BBC NI elsewhere on Ch 953 although it's advertised as BBC NI HD only - maybe available on iPlayer later
