Anyone bringing one back to life ?

Bought mine new in 1998, enjoyed 15 k miles but parked it up in the garage in 2006 where it has stood covered up in dry storage for ten years.

Thought of bringing it back to life and returning it to the road.

Totally reliable when it was put away with a full tank of fuel when I started enjoying BMW's more.

May as well get it back on the road before I'm to old to enjoy it again:augie

Anyone done similar and have an idea what maybe involved , pitfalls, things that need replacing other than the belts and a major service. :nenau

No idea. But love the bike and good luck getting it back on the road. If i had a bigger garage, i'd love to own one!

They are starting to rise in value. So leave it there for another ten years if you don't need it.

I have 97 916 with 3000 miles on it sitting in my living room and have thought of breathing life back into it, but enjoying my 900ss, RT1150 and GSA to bother. 900 ss was stored for several years. New battery fitted, belts, oil, filter changed. Tyres pumped up ,fired up ok only to find a rusty pin hole on left side lowest point. Removed new petrol as tank was full when left but, empty when fiddling. Guess this was caused by standing with side stand only for all that time. Tank was cleaned and sealed. Now sweet and running fine. As for the 916 which has stood all these years (200) ,nearly afraid to look in tank.lol The carb needles could be sticky best to give them a clean out proper and check fork and other seals as the could be dosey. Probably best changing tyres too. Good luck and enjoy.

Maybe best to have it looked at and evaluated by an indie specialist. I've looked up on YouTube the belt change methods and that's probably doable at home if care is taken. The other side of that is the valve settings ( shims etc ) this can only be done with the belts off and the cams out, somewhat more complicated needing tools and shims etc. so this needs to go hand in hand with the belt change.
I'm hopeful that if the fuel hadn't gunked up the fuel injection system a full £ 700 service and new battery , possibly tyres may just cut it.
Don't want it going to these fancy dealership places, would rather a good indie took it on.

Cheers for the recommendation fella but that really needs to go to a specialist. I brought a Cagiva Elefant 900 back to life after 20 years in a barn. I did get it all sorted but it was discovery after discovery. A dedicated Duke inde will know exactly what to do and get on with it.

I am searching out a good specialist tmrw. Can't see any other way forward with something like a Ducati .

Two things I don't have are knowledge and the tools required to make a proper job of it.
Hopeful it's just a major service and a bit of a fettle .

Okay Captain Black

Do NOT put a battery in and even THINK of touching that starter button without getting those belts changed

When I worked at the BM dealer in Belfast who were/are well known penny pinchers

When a Ducatti was up for Belts they got changed EVEN the sales bikes in the showroom!

It was 2 years or 14,00 miles If I remember correctly

Wouldn't dream of it Doc, the possible associated doom is too much to even contemplate.
I've sorted a specialist , he will remove the belt covers and evaluate an initial start up just to make sure the fuel system isn't gunked up, like I say its been ten years since she ran.
All being well a full service and some TLC will bring the old girl back to life. :D
