HELP: Edinburgh to Basingstoke via Dales and Preston ?

Hi All,

I am planning a trip back from Edinburgh to Basingstoke soon (trip up == motorway for speed, sigh) and plan to visit friends in Preston for tea, and before that to go through Buttertubs Pass:

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.s...=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf

...one of my favourite bits of road in Yorkshire, en-route for Preston.

That still leaves two yawning gaps: Edinburgh-to-Yorkshire, and Preston-to-Birmingham(ish). I reckon that by the time I get to Brum, it'll be getting dark.

Has anyone recommendations for nice bits of road in/along those routes?

Thanks!

Not a late start, but departing after breakfast, aiming for Yorkshire for brunch, Preston for late lunch, then bobbling baby goddaughter on knee, that sort of thing, should consume some time...

Ah! Google says it is an AutoRoute file - alas I am a Garmin MapSource user.

Any chance of a set of directions, or a GIF, or similar please?

Do you particularly recommend any of those bits?

In the first two pics:
The B road at "3" is lovely and flowing tisties and much more fun than the A68. Nice surface too.
"4"-"5" Hartside pass, youd be mad to miss it.;)
"6" Buttertubbs (you done it before? Nice road but the road leading to it is a tad tight and twisy for some peoples liking. Great "GS" road tho:D)
"9"-"10" Hawes to guisburn. Fantastic stretch, esp the Hawes - Ribblehead stretch.

The rest of the pics:
First bit just gets you southbound on some of the more bearable main roads
3-4 Snake pass. :D All the bit in the green of the peak district is fun tho. Stop off at bakewell for a pud (not the same as the tart) if you have never had a proper one.
The run down to 11 is the best compromise for "nice" roads and ones you can make decent progress on.
Then the roads get better but are still fast.:D

Re: Re: Re: Wheee!

Superb! I've done Buttertubs on a DRZ400, but not taken the GS there yet, so I look forward to a bit more torque. :D

The new stuff is greatly appreciated - I shall try reconstructing it on MapSource tonight.

Thanks again!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Wheee!

Well, I'm back, and it was a superb route, thanks! I'll be revisiting bits of it, especially the Hartside pass section, which is good warm-up for the Alps later in the year. :D
