Valve Clearances

Just been reading the Clymer manual re: checking valve clearances on the 1100. It says to loosen the head bolts 1/4 of a turn, then re- tighten to correct torque.

Why?

After 80,000 miles, surely the head is on tight enough!

Do main dealers do this when carrying out a service or just do the clearances without loosening the head bolts?

Seems like an unneccessary proceedure to me - what's the score techy types?

Just set the valve clearances as normal.
The head nut slackening is for the 600miles after re-building/new engine re-torque.
