is there any other suppliers of ohlins and bbchips other than motorworks out there,I have been told there is 10-12 week waiting time for the shocks are they really that popular? I will be ordering 4 shocks and 2 chips as a mate wants a set for his 1150 also, and I have been given a price of £1800 is this cheap?has anyone brought from the suspension specialists in MCN?.

Lind's of Norwich supplied & fitted a front Ohlins for my Adventure for £385, supplied a rear one for £364*, they are in the process of supplying & fitting a Techlusion Chip for £199. Lead time on the Ohlins was about 10-14 days. I believe they deal with BB chips, but you'll have to ring & confirm....

Talk to Barry Lynes on 01603 620222 (ask for Motorcycle Dept)

*fitting is about 1 hr = £40

Talking of shocks,

I was talking to a friend in the trade the other day, when I mentioned that most people are fitting quality shocks to there GS's.

His advise was to get the origional;s set up by someone who knows there stuff, and you'll save yourself £700 and never tell the differance

My bike a 2002 1150GS now 4500miles.

I) is he right,
2) where can I get a good set up,
3) what noticable improvements are there if you have got Ohins etc

Andy,
Try Harris Performance - the UK Ohlins importers in Hertfordshire.
I ordered mine at the NEC show - show price was £350, it was the same price for rear shocks on my 100GSPD as it was for an 1100/1150GS even though they were different shocks. To have mine customised (re-sprung & re-valved) cost me another £50. Lead time was six weeks and it arrived 3rd week in December.

Don't really understand what he meant, Jenks. AFAIK, the original (Showa) shocks are not a service item ie you are stuck with the factory set spring & valving. Certainly the pre-load etc can be altered, but the advantage of Ohlins / WP etc is that you can have them set up for your needs/weight/use by the dealer/manufacturer, as well as being able to set the adjustments available on the standard shock. Being a fat bastard and planning for a RTW, when the bike will be heavily laden, this is a considerable advantage to me....

Jenks,Having ridden an R11gs with ohlins all I can say is there are an improvement over OE.But they still need to be set up.I myself have a 2002 1150 which Im quite happy with standard shocks but Ill wait till about 15000 miles then Ill change for ohlins or WP(unless I get a really good deal on some b4 that).
For your information Ive got my front shock at position 3.The rear rebound at 0.5 turn away from max and the rear preload I adjust all the time to suit my load.If your going to start fiddling with suspension check your tyre pressures are spot on before hand.

Talking from experience
I replaced both front and rear shocks because they were knackered after 7k,
I actually had the rear shock replaced under warranty which is now sitting on a shelf 60 miles old.

1)Your friend obviously has'nt looked at your shocks as mike said
theres one adjustment at the front and two at the back.
2)have a look at your manual and go from there
3)At 4,500 miles i would'nt worry about your shocks as they should be fine for at least another 5k.
But if you do decide to buy some ohlins expect a much smoother and predictable ride, ie they don't fade after 20 mins.

Standard fitment shocks are a bit of a compromise, i had a 2001 Honda CBR600FI and i fitted a HYPERPRO rear shock (multi adjustable) and HYPERPRO front springs and spacers to the bike, i couldn't believe the improvement over the standard equipment, i could travel 15-20 mph faster everywhere!, it was like being in another dimension, it really was that good. I intend, at some stage, to replace the suspension on my GS with a top spec brand, and i expect to see similar results. IMHO replacing the shocks will be money well spent.

CW Motorcycles in Dorchester usually stock Ohlins shocks. I popped in last Friday and picked up a rear, took me about half an hour to fit. I was told they need running in for about 200miles to clear the sticktion. Did that on the Saturday, but havn't had a chance to get out since. Lokking forward to some dry roads without the icy bits.

Has anyone had both WP and Ohlins on their oilhead? How do they compare with each other? Tough choice!

Ohlins at CW

Mike

I paid £410, and I said absolute piece of cake to fit - Now sorting out the best setting might be another matter........

Thanks everyone, did not realise that the was so much differance. Just shows 20 years of biking and you still learn somthing new.

Looks like the next expence will be a set of shocks, Ohins, WP or those new once that were at the NEC bike show. (Cannot remember the name) but they did look good.

Ohlins

What is the situation with 2nd hand set of Ohlins with say 30K miles on them, is it reccomended to have them serviced, who will do it, at what cost and where

Any other comments on the longevity and ongoing care would be appreciated
