Jam,
I've met Phil (Boxerman). He works from his house near Thurmaston and earns his living from repairing/servicing bikes and running bike tours. He's a nice guy who's really into his Boxers (obviously). I don't think you will find a more conscientious mechanic anywhere. I bought an R80GS last year and took it round for him to check out; he gave it a free going over before quoting me for a service.
Mick Barr used to be the Leicester BMW dealer before closing his shop and setting up a home workshop. I like Mick but he did a poor service on my mates R100RS and told me that my gearbox was on it’s last legs and needed a £350 rebuild I got a second opinion from Pidcocks mechanic who said it was normal for 95 GS Gearboxes to rattle at tickover and that there was nothing wrong with mine at all; that was 12k ago and it’s never got any louder or played up at all, however, I know Mick has a good reputation with the BMW club and Ian Underwood, the GSClubUK organiser for Leicester, uses him and I believe he’s very happy with the service he gets.
Pidcocks pulled a fast one on me when I bought a K1 from them. I took the bike back after a week complaining that the rear brake grabbed and that there was a misfire when it was damp. They kept the bike for a few days before giving it back saying that there was nothing wrong with it. I checked the bike out and found that one of the rear calliper pistons had seized and that one of the HT leads had cracked.
