need to look at servicing my 1100 GS. Its gonna be the 12k service and my first quote (Pidcocks @Long eaton) is £230. Anyone any comments on Pidcocks or indeed an alternative dealer..................

Thanks for your time:beerjug:

Jam,

don't know anything about Pidcocks, but that price is fairly reasonable, assuming it includes parts & VAT. Prices vary wildly from dealer to dealer, I'd say that quote was at the lower end for a 12k.

Free Lunch

Although I use Pidcocks for consumables it may be worth ringing Rainbow in Sheffield. You will probably find for the same price as Pidcocks you can have a nice ride to Sheffield do a bit of shopping and have lunch. Problem is getting it booked in cos Rainbow are always busy.

Don't know what this guy is like, but take a look at his website. I have had no experience of him, but the BMW club reckon he's OK. I think he's near you.

Thanks for that Pint6.

I have contacted him by email and just for the record he has quoted me £155 and subject to a suitable time i can also go and watch him carry out the service.

For the record he has no Visa card facilities etc

anyone used this guy or indeed know of any others?

Cheers

There is also a guy called Mick Barr in Scraptoft (east leicester) who also is a BMW specialist.

Jam,

I've met Phil (Boxerman). He works from his house near Thurmaston and earns his living from repairing/servicing bikes and running bike tours. He's a nice guy who's really into his Boxers (obviously). I don't think you will find a more conscientious mechanic anywhere. I bought an R80GS last year and took it round for him to check out; he gave it a free going over before quoting me for a service.

Mick Barr used to be the Leicester BMW dealer before closing his shop and setting up a home workshop. I like Mick but he did a poor service on my mates R100RS and told me that my gearbox was on it’s last legs and needed a £350 rebuild I got a second opinion from Pidcocks mechanic who said it was normal for 95 GS Gearboxes to rattle at tickover and that there was nothing wrong with mine at all; that was 12k ago and it’s never got any louder or played up at all, however, I know Mick has a good reputation with the BMW club and Ian Underwood, the GSClubUK organiser for Leicester, uses him and I believe he’s very happy with the service he gets.

Pidcocks pulled a fast one on me when I bought a K1 from them. I took the bike back after a week complaining that the rear brake grabbed and that there was a misfire when it was damp. They kept the bike for a few days before giving it back saying that there was nothing wrong with it. I checked the bike out and found that one of the rear calliper pistons had seized and that one of the HT leads had cracked.

thanks

Rob,

thanks for the comments . I have quotes in now and there is very little difference in price between the 2 unauthorised BMW agents but they are both about £80 cheaper than Pidcocks.

What i do like is that i can go and see the service carried out which means i should get some FOC hints and tips which , as we all know, are really priceless.

I will post my comments after the service has been carried out.

I will kep an eye out for you Rob on Loughboroughs roads....................

Jam,

No problem. I'm always blagging around Leicester either Scraptoft or the Narborough Road. If you see me wave me down.

Are you coming to the next Coalville meet?

Would be interested to hear how you get on with Boxerman - do post with details of your experience please.

Hi folks

I've been to see Phil the boxerman - he reparied a stripped thread on the cylinder head cover bolt. good job and very good price which included a cuppa. He owns a GS.

I've also been to visit Mick - The BMW specialist. Didn't have any work done there though, but he left a friendly and knowledgeable impression.

Another option is Euro-Classics in Northhampton. A very nice set-up that I only discovered at the weekend. He's also a keen GSer. Although not in Leicester its a great friendly shop.

Hope this is helpful.

Regards, Bal

Public apology to Mick Barr.

On one of the earlier postings on this thread I said that Mick Barr had told me that my gearbox was on it's way out but there was nothing wrong with it...Well Mick was spot on. I was servicing my bike at the weekend and was greeted with a grey sludge in my gearbox oil, put the bike in gear with the engine off only to find a clanging sound coming from the gearbox.

So I'm feeling very guilty for putting Mick down when it was actually Pidcocks mechanic who got it wrong. I pulled the gearbox out on Sunday afternoon and dropped it round to Mick (feeling a bit sheepish) . I've now got a week and a half before heading to Spain; bit of a sweat on cause it's cutting it a bit fine.

I'm a bit pissed off because the bike has only done 30k and appeared to be in fine fettle. The clutch was also down to within 0.5mm of it's wear limit .
