Another new GSer

I'm collecting a new GS next week for a planned trip through Norway, Finland and then across Russia to Japan in the spring of 2008. I'd prefer to do it with company for the security bit but if I can't find anyone interested, I'll do it alone. I'm attending the horizons unlimited UK meeting in June to see if anyone has the same sort of plans. Anyone interested?

I'd love to Paul, but I doubt I can do it :(

I've ridden the Norway, Finland part of the route and thought it would be nice to cross into Russia but we were too far North and there were no roads to do it.

Horizions is a great place to start. We also have a resident Norwegian GSer (Liv, Norway) who lives in Oslo (I think) and has posted many useful links and information about GSing in Norway. It's well worth trawling through the site and looking these out.

Welcome aboard :thumb

Hi Paul how long do you think the trip will take, sounds fantastic what sort of plans have you made to date, will you need Visa's and all that sort of thing and where from Japan? Intresting :) Whats the longest trip on a bike you have done?
Where going down to southern spain in June to a place called Nerja on the south coast travelling through the chunnel down through france and then over the Pyrenees to Zaragoza around Madrid then south to Jaen, Granada then we hit the coast, having only done france on a 3 day trip to Le Mans last year this is my next step into mega mile munching bliss. :thumb

Hi Paul

I am planning to go Norway, Sweden, Russia and back thru Latvia, poland etc Leaving this June. i agree it would be better to buddy up for security. I am going with a pal who is going thru a divorce and wants to get away for a while, while due to the imminent smoking ban i would be losing my job next year so decided to jack it in soon and go for a bit of a bike ride!

Hiya Paul ,and welcome.. :beerjug:

That sounds a very interesting trip . ( And expensive  )

Got all the info re visas and so on from The Adventure Motorcycling Handbook by Chris Scott. I've got 3 months or so to do it which should be ample. I'll put the bike on a boat to get it home. I've done lots of trips around Europe - usually 2 to3 thousand miles in ten days. You'll love Spain. Superb roads and great people. Go up Sierra Nervada when you're in Granada - roads don't get any better.

We're doing Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland Germany Holland and home in April this year. We did a similar trip a couple of years ago but went to Germany from Sweden and then to Poland and up to the Russian enclave before turning around and heading home. Enjoy your trip !!

Thanks for the welcome Tarka. I reckon it'll cost about £5K for the three months but it will all depend on the amount of beer consumed!

Trip to Japan

Hi Paul,
It sounds like a great trip. I'm aiming to buy my GS in April/May from Ocean in Plymouth. I speak Chinese and have a relative in Beijing. He is even in shipping! This is my first time ever on a forum so I'll try to find this thread again if we don't speak today.

Thanks for the mail Graham. I'd have liked to cross through China but it is evedently difficult to get in. I am told that you need a paid escort and that it gets expensive. I'll have to follow the route around the top of China but am told that the roads are poor and that you have to pick the right time of year for the river crossings and mossies. Hope you enjoy the GS.
