I can't find much for Spain. I'm creating these from other POI databases such as the Tom Tom GPS format. So you won't be able to find anything other than the ones I post here.

Thanks Whatton - I've been looking for things beyond the UK for a few days.... Plenty for the this small island - perhaps we don't have enough to do or just have too many toys to play with! - but very few on the continent...

If you come across any there will doubtless be interest, at least from those from these shores...

However.. All well and good for those that are already known... but my point is more about.... say....
Being in France and looking for that IBIS or F1 in an area that's totally unfamiliar!?? ... when in fact it could be a few miles away!!

I'm not "avin a go".. I see you've put some effort in both converting and posting.. However... some will "take them as read" only to be ... perhaps disapointed...

So my question about reliability still stands... i reckon!? :thumb

Just open the attached file Kev has put on. If you don't already create a folder for Garmin Mapsource routes and way points. Just go to the drop down menu, on the open file and click 'Save as' and select your Mapsource folder, easy peasy, lemon squeezy. :thumb

There is no copyright holder for the lists of co-ordinates used. The original compiler of the lists made them freely available on the internet in another form.

I've taken those lists and converted them into a useable format for Garmin GPS units. They aren't being sold or being used for comercial gain they just being made available now in another format :)

Is it possible to change the 'name' column en masse?

Rather than a number for each Maccy D I'd rather it said MacDonalds etc when you point at it to highlight the waypoint. Otherwise I may end up at a Burger King and that would never do

What I would like is someone to verify a couple of the French hotel locations.

Does anyone now the exaxt location of one or two of the Ibis or F1's? If so is the way point in my file acurate enough to find it?

The IBIS in Limoges (central) is ~69 feet off (using the ruler tool) from the waypoint I made outside when I was there, so I'd say it was pretty good!!!

Again - F'ing great thread - why isn't it sticky yet????

Cheers

EDIT - just checked the one in Le Puy-en-Velay, and it's Bang On, but the wrong side of the road (if you see what I mean - directly opposite). So I'd say the IBIS ones are fine to be able to find the hotels.

You use them as you would any waypoint you've created yourself.

You could transfer all the waypoints in a file to your unit if you want and then use them as a destinations when creating routes on the unit. Or you could use them to create routes using Mapsource on your PC then transfer just the route to your GPS.

I don't know how much you know about routing and up-loading waypoints and routes to your unit so it's hard to work out what it is you need to know.

They're waypoints that can be used in lots of ways :thumb

No.

V7 is the versions of the maps. I'm guessing it's City Select Europe V7?

Mapsource 6.10.2 is the program on your PC that allows you to interface with it!

V7 will be on your GPS and PC. 6.10.2 is only on the PC, AFAIK.

Does any one know if it is possible to add icons to MapSource & therefore Garmin units ?? It would be nice to be able to use the origional Pocket GPS World icons for the speed cameras & then not need the name to be shown inorder to mean anything.
Also would be nice to show POI's posted here with a meaningfull icon.

Combined with a walk in the grounds (you can walk in the area between the hotel and the river where the troops maintained a perimeter), and a visit to the bridge... you get a good sense of The Longest Day...

I think making these POI files available is great. But following the process using the downloads from POIDownloads I would question the comprehensiveness of the data that's available. A good benchmark is "Local Authority Schools"; using POIDownloads for this category, the list only lists 3500 or so schools. Clearly there have to be more than 30,000 LEA schools in the UK.

Actually creating these files looks straightforward, so thanks to Whatton for sharing the method. I will follow links given and try a few things as well.

I noticed the 'proviso' on the POIDownload site which said (paraphrase) "For some businesses their geographical location will be taken as the centre of a post code area. Whilst in urban areas this will be pretty accurate, in rural areas this may not be the case". Probably explains why a bike business in the sticks may be a couple of miles out.

I personally would like to thank Whatton for giving enough clues as to how this is done. I'm interested in the methodology, so have learned something new - so a definite 'Thanks' for that. If you ever come across a 'red light area' list, it would probably go for a fortune (not that I would want to use one mind you. But as they say, "Sex is the internet's biggest seller".)

Many thanks.
Graham G

This thread is AWESOME :thumb2 Thank you so much for this.

A long shot I know, but any chance of campsites in the rest of Europe, namely Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Czech republic? (Bet you can't tell where I'm going ;) ) Any one of those countries would be supremely helpful. If not no worries, the ones posted are a huge help anyway!

Not completly off topic.....

Is it possible to convert aa route planner routes to Garmin routes? I am very new to mapsource and i am having issues as the start and end postcodes tend to give me "no object found" when I use the find function.

Any tips?

Are you using CN NT? If not, in the UK at least, you'll only reduce the search to an area, not a street as you can with the full postcode.

Yes, I am on V9. As a slight aside, it does not find my sisters postcode in Teddington.

Are there any :nenau :augie ;)

Not really the kind of thing I can dig up. If someone's got a list of address's or a POI file in another format (Tom Tom etc.) then I can convert it :thumb2

Whatton,
Thank You for your assistance, no worries about Ibis, it was just a suggestion for a place to stay while I'm Germany, from a friend.
You really have done a great thing for the board with the hard work you've put into this thread!:beerjug: :beerjug: Any chance you'll be on the Isle of Man for the TT ? I'll buy the first TWO rounds!

A few more added from a file sent to me by ST4S :thumb2

3 are locations of German U-boat pens, where they sailed from out to try
and sink the Atlantic convoys.

1 is the 'Normandie' dock in St Nazaire (The site of what has to be one
of the greatest ever Special Forces raids.)

1 is at Pegasus Bridge, but it's not the bridge itself, it's the landing
spot of the first British glider on D-Day, a few yards away.

Has anyone produced a file of Swedish campsites?

araspitfire

This is a good way to get lots of Free POI's...

Go here:
http://www.poihandler.com

You need to register... but pretty much all but the speed camera POI's are free... I just checked, and they have over 1000 campsites organised by type in Sweden...

Unfortunately POIHandler doesn't seem to support the Garmin 2610 (looking at the Supported Systems page).

Thanks to Whatton (I think it was) for posting the Norwegian Campsites as waypoints. Just after Sweden and Denmark now

araspitfire

With a bit of further research, you could find a program that would convert the POI handler files (they do a bunch of different kinds)... into something you could download into the 2610...

FYI, I downloaded the Sweden Campground waypoints in Google Earth Format, then used GPSBabel to convert them to Garmin gdb format.

where do I get speed camera overlay for a quest1 from?

Ideally free as it will have limited use - understand there's no sound ability when put on a quest1

Anyone know if these can be had with mobile sites included?

Thanks Rob

Thanks to Whatton I now have exhaustive supply of interesting and very useful waypoints on my new Zumo 550, the dogs numpties, thanks for that. It's the IT buffs like you willing to share your knowledge that keep people like me afloat, I can only hope someday that I can return the favour, thanks again.

Only had the Zumo for a couple of months so only just started looking at what's available on the site. This thread is superb. A big thank you to Whatton and the others who have posted info. Earlier in the thread Whatton commented that there wasn't a lot available for Spain. I wondered whether the position had changed, especially as regards hotels? I've seen the Parador file, but quite honestly a bit too pricey for my tastes. I've started bookmarking places reccomended in the travel section, but any further information would be very useful. Once again, many thanks for your hard work.

I am trying to load a few of these waypoint files into mapsource
but all the previous waypoints seem to dissapear when I load
up a new file. only letting me load and display one file at a time.
For instance I load up 'etap hotels' place it in the accomadation catagory that I have created, save - load up another waypoint file and all the etap ones dissapear displaying the way points from the new file only.

What am I doing wrong?

Each set of waypoints is a separate Mapsource file.

If you want them all in one big file you need to highlight the waypints in the left hand list and copy them. Then paste them into the file you want them all in.

Have a read of this (http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87291) to get an idea of how Mapsource works :thumb2
