can anyone tell me how to remove a power restrictor on my wifes 650gs - she wants to up the auntie a bit....

adunn,

Try here on the "Chain Gang" site under technical/FAQ's etc.

Not sure if they have power restrictions in the US, but there's normally a lot of useful (& sometimes useless :D) info on the site

The power restrictor is no more than a throttle stop mounted on the throttle body where the cable attaches (I assume that we are talking of a FI model here - if it's not, I dunno what the answer is!).

You will need the standard throttle stop plate which should be no more than a couple of quid from the dealer if you weren't given one with the bike.

You will also need a tool to undo the two or three tamper-proof torx screws that hold the plate in place. The heads on these screws has a regular torx recess, but also have a small tit sitting in that recess. You will probably have to buy the BMW service tool or go to a specialist tool-shop to get one.

Once you have those bits, it's just a question of dismantling the bike until you can access the throttle-body. Here's my tip - you start with the front-right indicator - honest!

This is the "official" reply I received when I queried the procedure form BMW Head Office in the UK.

"The early F650 GS bikes had to have a new throttle housing and throttle cable holder, the later ones have two positions on the throttle quadrant for the throttle cable to clip in and would also need the different cable holder.

This is all that is required to restrict an F650 to 33 bhp. There was talk of having to recode the engine electrics but as far as I know this is not required.

We recommend this is done by a dealer so that a letter of authority can be given to the customer for insurance purposes as there is no certificate as such to say that this modification has been carried out."
