The French motorbiker mag Moto-Journal has done an extensive test of heavy dual-purpose bikes (called Trials here).

The results:

1. BMW R1150GS 446 points out of 560 max
2. Triumph Tiger 440
3. Aprillia Caponord 437
4. Honda Varadero 412

The GS was found best in class on handling, "life on board" and for the passenger. It was last on the engine section, but with a mention that despite a weaker engine, it could handle off-road and normal road conditions better than others. It also lost out on the financial section, no surprise there.

In the "handling" section, it crushed all competition in all areas.

Excellent!

Yeah - but they should have asked us - we could have saved 'em the bother!:D

With the residuals on a GS compared with the others in the test, I'm surprised it didn't score very highly in the financial bit.....

Dougie Lampkin

Scurrell you suggest Dougie would 'hop over logs', surely you mean he'd go straight through them, that way he'd avoid a least a dab.
