Crown wheel bearing/s?

Greetings oh wise ones.

Bit of a creak from the rear end today which I thought might be one of the pivots needing a bit of WD40. Then I checked for play across the rear wheel and ... yep there is a bit. Not a lot but it is perceptible.

I've checked the OEM site and done a search here and the likely suspect seems to be the large ball bearing on the crown wheel or is it safer to replace that AND the taper roller on the other side?

The bike's done 17k miles.

How many miles has the bike done?.
Unless the main bearing has collapsed and the unit has been run,the taper bearing should not need to be changed.Dont forget the large seal.
The creaking suggest it would be wise to replace both paralever bearings while the whole lot is in pieces.They appear to be over-tightened at the factory and get notchy.

Thanks Colban. I dropped the wheel out and checked the rear end of the paralever. No creaking from there! Moves smoothly in the vertical plane. I tried for any lateral movement and that seems OK too although there's not the same leverage as with the wheel on. Put the 4 bolts back in to the hub and tried lateral play again but nothing evident this time. Again, the lack of leverage might be the reason for this.

I'll put it all back together again and double check for lateral play across the wheel.

Almost certainly it's your paralever bearings, NOT the crown wheel bearing.
