We're off on Saturday to Europe.....2up for 2 weeks.
I have a rough idea of where I want to go.............but we're taking it mainly on the hoof and the only thing we've booked is the middle weekend in Piran, Slovenia - on the Adriatic, so we can have some R&R on the beach.
I'm looking for tips on the Northern Black Forest.........best bits near the 500 road (which is most scenic bit)
Then an area I haven't done.........the Italian Lakes ...........are they worth it........is Riva Del Garda worth a stop-over......
Then I'm going to cross over to the Dolomites..........is Corvara worth using as a base (last time we stayed in La Villa/Stern)
Also from there, it's over to Slovenia..........anybody got tips for the Bled/Tolmin/Zaga/Kabarid area for a hotel for the night.
On the return leg..........I was thinking of going to the Krimml waterfall area in Austria............is it worth a look, any hotel recommendations locally..........
That's about it............awaiting your tips and suggestions with regard to the above questions
Johnny..we found the most perfect road up through a gorge above Lake Garda (I think) earlier this year...the lakes are fantastic.......
This road was tiny and wiggly and wound its way for miles up a really deep ravine with deep drops into a perfectly blue river......I've got the track log at home so I'll dig it out when I get back (I'm in the Midlands today) and identify the road if I can...unles BHT comes along and beats me to it.
Bill
Off on a similar route next week:)
Freiburg is nice, Lake Como is worth a visit also. Taking the hydrofoil from Como to Belaggio is a nice day out also.

Cheers Bill...........much appreciated........the Italian Lakes is an area that I haven't explored (always thought it was too busy and crowded).........although I did stay @ Sirmione on Lake Garda, having driven there in the car in 1991, whilst on another adventure!!!!!!!!!!
we were in the Lake Garda area last year unfotunately not on bikes the Town of Malcesine is nice and if it's a chill out day you can take the cable car to the top of Mte Baldo. The road's up to the Dolomites are fantastic and the scenery breath taking.
Hope to go back on the bike sometime.

Spent a week in the Dolomites last summer, not on the bike - I was climbing.
Corvara is a very pleasant place for a base - but you'll be lucky to find accomodation as all of Germany (and thier bikes) are there for the summer! They spend all day doing the "4 Passes" route via Canezei and Arraba. An exhilarating trip if you like hairpins :yikes
Corvara has an excellent (pink?) tea shop. well worth a visit in the afternoon sun ;)

Ok, here we go......
I'm pretty sure the road I mentioned was a diversion we took when when Vern managed to get back en-route and was heading south......we were aiming for Dole eventually to meet him but had been heading down towards Italy........
It doesn't look much from that map but if I've got the right road, it was absolutely awesome...a tiny road, but spectacular.
Further along, we went up the valley to St Moritz....a nice long ride alongside the lakes with the mountains up the valley sides..then you get to the end of the valley and drop off down some incredible switchbacks......
Again, doesn't look much, but if you zoom in a little........

As so often happens in photos, this one just doesn't do justice to the curves, steepness or the feeling of caning it down that series of bends.....but it's taken from near the top of that series of switchbacks on the drop off from the St Moritz valley (ok It's not actually called that but WTF....you know what I mean)
I've got the whole GPS plot if you'd like Johnny.....but TBH, anywhere around there, follow your nose and you'll have a fantastic trip.
Damn I really ought to go back and finish that ride report !!!
