Hi,

As I mentioned y'day, I have put the new type cam chain tensioner in the lhs of the bike ('02, 25,000kms) and the clatter is gone. Big improvement.
Maybe there is a Dog, after all.

I've ordered the bits to do that on mine. Hope its as successful!! :)

Yep, bought my 2002 ADV last autumn with only 7K miles, it was the first job I did :thumb

Did you order the parts direct from BMW? How much were they in total?
My bike sounds like a tractor at times!

Ordered mine from motorworks. 1131656922 Tensioner, 11317688629 tensioner barrel, and a copper washer. All in just under £50 inc vat and delivery. Ordered Wed arrived this morning and just about to get done!!

Tell us more! I once asked my local dealer and they quoted me 130£ for 1

Will the same price one fit to 1100 too?

No rattle or bad sounds from mine yet, but it's better to be prepared, as i understand "they all do that sir" sooner or later it happends(?)

Margus :beerjug:

BTW, mine came with a new spring, which is not required as there is a captive spring inside the "cylinder". What you need is cylinder, plunger and copper wsher.

Fitted to mine today - what a difference, the rattle was an embarassment, but now its quiet and silky smooth.

Ebbo published this list of compatible bikes on his website. So it looks like the R1100GS is covered.

According to the 2006 BMW ETK parts DVD the modified tensioner parts will fit the following models:

R850GS/R1100GS..94-
R850R/R1100R..94-
R850RT/R1100RT..94-
R850C/R1200C..97-
R1100RS.....92-
R1100S.....98-
R1150GS.....99-
R1150GS ADVENTURE
R1150RT.....01-
R1150R.....01-
R1150RS.....01-
R1200C INDEPEND..00-
K30 R1200 COMFORTLIN
R1200C ....03-
K25 R1200 GS
K28 R1200 ST
K26 R1200 RT

Good to see they continued to fit the rattly one to the 1200's :D

Did the modified camchain tensioner mod to my bike this morning. It made such a difference!! No more clatter at tick over. The bike has now got just over 26,500 miles. It started to clatter at about 18k and has got progressively worse. The job was reasonably straight forward and I started buy separating the throttle body on the left side from the air box tube.

On reassembly the 'o' ring to the throttle body at the air box tube end was the only bit that was fiddly as it had expanded. I shrunk it bit by blasting it with a hair dryer. A spare one of these would save you a bit of hassle

I disconnected the wiring to the TPS unit and the injector and removed the injector

Sorry these crap pictures!! The lower TB mounting bolt was easy to get at with a standard Allen key. My bike is fitted with HB engine bars so getting at the upper mounting bolt resulted in a multi coupled contraption........could have just taken the bars off :D :D

Once the TB was bungied out of the way the Tensioner itself was easy got at. I used a 17mm ring spanner to undo it.

It just pulled up leaving the spring

The links below describe using bent paperclips and magnets to retrieve the old plunger. I did it by sticking my pinkie (little finger  ) in to see what size the plunger was. I stuck an 8mm Allen key down the inside of it and was able to fish it straight out.......Twice once to try it and once for the picture :)

Comparison of the new and old bits. Disassembled

Assembled.

I dropped the new plunger into the hole and bolted down the new cylinder. The new part needs a 15mm spanner and its supposed to be torqued to 32NM.......but your not getting a socket and torque wrench under the telelever. I don't think it would matter too much as long as you don't overdo it.

Reasembly is a matter of bolting the TB back and reconecting the injector and the cables to the injector and TPS. I did a bit of faffing around with the 'o' ring to the airbox tube but I recon this wouldn't be a problem if a new one was to hand for refitting.

After starting the bike up an initial rattle was replaced by silence. Took the bike out and run it up to temperature and it remained smooth and quiet. I let her cool down and started her again from cold......still no rattle. Result I'd say :D

PS the Av rider disturbed a lot more stuff than I did :nenau

Nice one.

I just undid the air intake clamp, pushed it back into air box, then undid the front clamp, pulled body up as much as I could to limit of earth wire etc.

Need to watch the throttle cable reseats into adjuster, that's about it.

Has any one got a sound file of what it sounds like??? I have just inherited a rattle on my 1150 which i kept thinking was something loose(more plasticy sound) rattling at the front end. Checked al i can see but everthing seems nice n tight.:nenau Only noticed it since its been in BMW shop having new sight glass fitted?
Any ideas??
Many thanks in advance:

what ? ehh?

I didn't know anything about this , I thought it was just those large pistons clattering around until they got warm:D :D :D :D

is this a common fault and should I do the repair ?
02 adv with 30000 miles, it does sound a bit rough when it starts

Cheers

Rob

lhs Cam Tensioner upgrade.

By any chance do you have the part numbers from maddocks please ?

Check out Youtube Chris Harris, BMW Guru on getting rid of that start-up rattle by swapping out the LHS (ONLY) Cam Tensioner 17mm head for the 15mm hex -head upgrade.
