Never run out of fuel!

If like me you dont have an Adventure with a 100 litre tank (!), or are going off road and get caught short, then syphoning fuel off your mates might just get you home....

Im on tour soon so went looking for some hose pipe and took a trip to a local aquatic retailer and stumbled across the perfect solution - an aquarian syphon.. which has a hand pump to make life really easy... all for £6.50!

There's bound to be others on the market, but here it is

Presto!

Andy.....be careful, that looks like a recipe for disaster....if the tubing's not silicone, it's unlikely to be petrol resistant.......and melted plastic in a fuel tank could seriously bugger up the pipes, injectors etc etc.

Test it out first :thumb2

PS there are similar syphon gadgets available specifically for petrol, but I've never bothered, though I do carry a 5 foot length of silicone tubing for that purpose (as well as draining out drowned bikes on fords runs :augie :blast )

Hi

Yes I have tested it, stuck it in a jerry can for 10 mins and it didnt melt. I dont know if its silicone or not, but your comment is nonetheless valid. Anyone using this does it at their own risk, its obviously not what the product was designed for! :)

If there is a specific product out there I have never found it, perhaps you could post details?

Thanks!

Andy

This is what you want. Most decent car spares places sell them. There's no need to suck petrol into your mouth etc with this device.

There was a Dutch chap with an 1100, he'd fitted a diverting tap on his fuel return pipe along with a seperate switch to operate his fuel pump. when he wanted to pump fuel from his bike to somebody elses or into a container he just turned the tap and pressed the switch. Damned if I can find the link anymore

edit:

Found it http://home-1.worldonline.nl/~hkuijer/

I've run out of petrol or been able to find a petrol station in 30 years of drivng/riding. Anywhere in the world, off road or on road . :nenau And if your mates have the same amount of fuel as you !!!!!!!!!.

I'm getting old.

Touratech do one 070-0690 (page 278 TT cata) £8 I think. You take off the side panel and clip it onto the fuel return, start the engine etc.

I want to use one to extract fuel for my camping stove.

Filling fuel bottles..

I carry just undert two meters of silicon fuel tubing for syphoning. Not had to use it for the bike yet, but has been pretty usefull for filling MSR fuel bottles for my stove.

Fuels cans for outboard motors use a hand syphoning pump and hose which is perfect, you can buy the bits separately from any chandlers.

Fuel gauges

Not really necessary
Carry a box of matches - waterproof ones are best
If unsure of the residual fuel in the tank
Stop open the filler cap and peer in
It is really NOT safe to do this while moving
If you need a little light to see into the tank
Well strike a match - Doh
The matches are also useful as tooth picks
The tendency to over complicate really should be avoided
Fuel gauges me arse:mad:
