NTLDR not present....uuhhh

My friends PC won't boot up and keeps failing with the message NTLDR not present. I suspect this is a driver but can't get past this point.
When I try to press F8 during boot up I get no joy either.

Any help appreciated.

it's not a driver. it's a file needed for NT,W2k,XP boot process, see here

this may help, or you could boot from OS installation CD & use repair option to fix the Master Boot Record. tried it myself once. it didn't work

had a similar problem on a PC at work, fortunately, nobody saw me try and fix it so switched it off and didn't go near it again

Sounds like the installation disk is the way to go though

You also get that error message if you try to boot NT with a floppy in the drive,

I've seen this happen more than once. If it's not because you've got a floppy in the floppy drive, your (or his) harddisk is probably dead.

This is a fairly new hard disk so it would appaer there is an underlying problem that is causing the hard disks to fail prematurely. I think I am out of my depth here and may console my friend with a beer or two before I break the bad news....

Harddisks aren't what they used to be any more. I often see disks fail after a year or so. They're not built to last I'm afraid.

Could be caused by a drop or some kind of shock.

It is possible that the file got damaged or lost by some coincidental event. In that case a reinstall or repair can help.

But don't get your hopes up too high. I've done that several times to find myself replacing the harddisk anyway, a short while later.

Thanks for the advise. I have noticed that the -5V is actually showing -62V in the system setup. However I would have thought if it was this far out it wouldn't work at all..!!!!! I'll see if I can poach a spare power supply from someone and try that.

Any PC experts know what the -5V relates to??

-5v rail does seem a little out of tolerance

might just be the measuring utility though.

i'd be inclined to put a meter on it. guide here

i have also seen several newish HDDs pack up recently. i have become a big fan of drive image 7 as a result

should have said before, but i'm not sure how low volts would cause the missing file, maybe it's affecting HDD performance.

it needs looking into anyhow though.

if you do need new PSU this page has q-tec models that i've heard are pretty good & very cheap. 400w model would do for most systems.

fitting is a doddle.

This is the 3rd HArd disk to go in 12 month apparently so there is an underlying reason somewhere. I'm back offshore in the morning so I'll have a look when I get back and I've given her my old PC in the mean time as I've just fired up this new Compaq which is the bees knees and I've even got braodband as from last Friday - Top Stuff.

Why? Aren't the HDDs just the same? How is one operating system going to work any better than another with missing files - or will mac-os just recreate them out of thin air.
