640 adventure

Definitely very clean, can't be used much

Out of interest,
Does the 701 have the same Shiite steering lock as the 690?
Is the 790 any better?

The 701 (and the new 690) has a revised frame taken from the 450RR design, which has much better steering lock.

2x640
1x690
As much as I love them in the right environment, couldn’t live with them.:comfort
What I need is a brand new, still in the crate 525,,,maybe:rolleyes:

They're not for everyone and I couldn't live with a standard one either, now 10 years and countless big trips all in its natural environment it's proved to be more than up to the job.

My 520 exc is better than new and a reallyvsweet ride although it'll never have the range, luggage capacity, wind protection etc. without compromising its handling but I still fancy doing a long trip on it sometime :)

I get what you are saying,I don’t have the time to develop a bike at the mo,to have a sorted bike takes time and miles.
My old funduro was brill,,well sorted, and reliable.
I’ve got to get my new one to the same place.

Was out on my new 690 at the weekend and didn't notice an issue. Certainly easier to turn round than the 1190 !

OK so far. Perhaps this should have been the bike to replace the HP.

Just got to get myself trail fit again :D

now got a new one :)

Good man, looks very tidy :beerjug:

In addition to everywhere else this bike has taken me, (4x Morocco, 2x Trans America Trail etc etc) it's just faultlessly completed it's 10th trip around Iceland so hope you have as much fun with your's and it'll be interesting to see how the new touch screen bikes fayre after that long ;)

should never have sold my first!!! learnt my lesson now, collect dont sell :)

The whole reason for having it is, few if any electonics, light and most important for me its tall with a big seat to peg length, oh and so much lighter than the 990, not sure I am going to pick it when its a quick blast over to germany and back but I am planning a trip to Netherlands in October

Get yourself an FCR carb on it, it'll dramatically reduce vibration (which I only notice on long tarmac stretches below 4500rpm, at 5000 rpm it becomes much smoother) and transforms the performance.

Selling my 1200GS as fancy downsizing. DR650 is on the list but I see a '99 640 for sale local to me. Stock bike with only 7000 miles apparently; documented service history. I had one years ago for a very short period and if I remember found it very tall. Are these easy to lower (5' 8", 29" inseam but I'm probably a few kgs heavier now :D). Any reason to favour a '99 over what I think was a slightly updated model around 2003/2004. The bike seems to be priced accordingly to it's rarity and low mileage..... I could probably have 2 x DR650's for the same price.

In short, there is no reason to favour a '99 model over the later Hi Flow engines.
The earlier ones need some work to make it a reliable engine. (Do a search on advrider) but that's not to say it's bad bike just the last of them are much better. ie around 2006.
I've had a well sorted DR 650 years ago and can tell you the 640 is in a different league entirely.

Time to overhaul and hopefully improve the fuelling on the 640's FCR carb.
