Back to the bridge

Following lifted from local news

EMERGENCY measures are now in place on Great Shefford's Swan Bridge following an investigation by a specialist diving team.
The bridge will be closed until May 12 after divers made an assessment of the scour damage to the bridge's foundations.
On May 12 a single lane of the A338 bridge will re-open to vehicles not exceeding three tonnes.
Temporary traffic signals will also be installed and there will be a physical two metre wide width restriction to ensure compliance with the three tonne weight limit on the bridge, according to the district council.
The existing diversion will remain in place for vehicles in excess of 3 tonnes.
The council says it has obtained verbal agreement from the Environment Agency to undertake emergency works and is currently assessing the possibility of a permanent repair that could alleviate the need for complete reconstruction.
According to council spokeswoman, Peta Stoddart-Crompton, the council is prioritising the inspection of bridges over main rivers across the district in light of this recent find.

12 of May for f#cks sake, Its not the Milau Bridge

Limited opening of Bridge

Update from West Berks re planned restricted opening

Andrew Sleigh, Parish Council Chairman, received the following
update today from Miles Roberts, Principal Engineer, West Berkshire
Council Highways and Transport:-

A specialist diving team made a full assessment of the scour damage
to the bridge foundations yesterday and we have come up with some
emergency measures that will enable us to reopen a single lane of
the A338 to vehicles not exceeding 3 tonnes on 12 May 2008. We
propose to provide temporary traffic signals at the bridge and a
physical 2m wide width restriction to ensure compliance with the 3
tonne weight limit. The existing diversion will remain in place for
vehicles in excess of 3 tonnes. We have the verbal agreement of the
Environment Agency to undertake the emergency works under special
consent subject to the submission of adequate method statements.

We are currently assessing whether we can undertake a permanent
repair to the existing bridge that will alleviate the need for
complete reconstruction and allow us to completely reopen the A338
to all traffic. Again any proposals for repair will require EA
consent but I am hopeful that we will know whether the bridge is
repairable by the 12 May 2008.

In light of the findings at Gt Shefford we will be prioritising the
inspection of other bridges over main rivers in Lambourn and across
the district.

still the long way around for 1150's then:augie:augie

Hi

'still the long way around for 1150's then'

and Harley's, and triumph's etc,

Thank goodness I own a 'lightweight' GS then

Joking aside the diversion is a bit of a pain ( adds approx 300 miles to my weekly journeys), can't be helped I know, just grin and bear it and keep putting the petrol in, ouch.

Surprised that the folks in Boxford hav'nt kicked off re additional traffic
through their domain.

Still confused as to :-

Why the 12 th May before limited access allowed

Lack of any sign of work at the bridge

Lack of info and apparent concern/interest from Highways Authority/West Berks Council

Answers to above greatfully received, in the mean time roll on the 12th

Hi Folks

Thanks for ideas

A lot of folks are doing just that parking up and walking, the Swan Pub's car park is absolutely crowded, in a way is fortunate that the Pub is still closed and the car park is available for such use.

Wish I could take advantage but basically I need the car to go to Lambourn both before and after work, and then need the car to travel to work in Abingdon. No choice or alternative.

Basically well and truley 'stuffed' :mad:at the moment, roll on the 12th

With respect to Maidencourt Farm. I know exactly where you're coming from and thanks :D, a few folks are using a variation on that theme but missing out Maidencourt totally by using a route a little to the west, but its a bit too rough especially so at the northern end ( and technically a restricted byway in parts ) for the manky grotty cheap old jallopy I drive, the track would really finish it off . Also I don't ( and dread that others will :rob) wish to really p#ss off the locals ( especially landowners/farmers) off totally, at the moment I'm relying on quite a bit of their goodwill to help me out, and thanks to that help :D, so its not as bad personally as previous contribution makes out.

Thank goodness I've got a GS to use as an alternative whenever possible for Lambourn trip :thumb:

Hi

Latest info lifted from local website

Bridge found to be seriously damaged. The foundations of the central pier between the two arches, on the down stream side was found to have been totally washed away as has a considerable section of the upstream end of the southern arch.

The engineer inspecting the bridge deemed it so damaged as to require the A338 to be immediately closed to through traffic.

On the afternoon of the 21st the A338 was closed under cover of an emergency road closure order.

Diversion routes were agreed with the WBC traffic team and the necessary statutory signage erected.

Notification of the closure was given to WBC Members, the Parish Council, all Utilities and Emergency Services.

Local businesses were also contacted by phone and alerted to the problem.

A press release was issued by WBC press office directed at the local papers, radio and television.

Tuesday 22nd April A further detailed inspection was made of the underside of the structure, and orders were placed for a specialist team of divers and for Mabey Ltd who supply temporary bridge decks to attend site on Wednesday 23rd April.

Wednesday 23rd April The diving team carried out a detailed structural survey, and photographed and made a video of the damaged areas to map the extent of damage and to determine if remedial works could be undertaken.

Mabey Ltd measured up the site but cannot at present supply a suitable bridge deck to over span the existing structure.

In light of this it was decided that a temporary repair would be attempted from below the bridge involving packing the scoured area with concrete contained in special waterproof bags and that the damaged arch be resurfaced in concrete on a mesh reinforcement frame. All work being undertaken by the team of divers.

A method statement to this effect was submitted to the Environment Agency. Their formal approval is awaited.

Proposed Action

28th April – 2nd May No remedial work on site possible as diving team have other urgent commitments. Materials are being sourced and delivered to depot.

Tuesday 6th May Work programmed to commence on emergency repairs.

Monday 12th May Temporary repairs sufficient to allow bridge to be re-opened will be completed.

When the bridge is re-opened a temporary 2 tonne weight limit and 6ft – 6inch width limit will be imposed as will shuttle working under cover of temporary traffic signals.

Repair work will continue on the bridge until all the damaged areas have been reinforced.

Once repair work is complete an independent assessment will be undertaken to determine whether the weight and width limits can be lifted or whether a full rebuild will be required.

It's Open ??

Attached again lifted from local website, will check tonight when home

Re-opening of the A338 in Great Shefford

The bridge will re-open :thumb:thumb with single file of traffic controlled by temporary traffic lights from mid afternoon today.

The bridge will re-open with single file of traffic, controlled by temporary traffic lights from mid afternoon today (9th May 2008) following some initial repairs. West Berkshire are waiting for the Environment Agency to get back to them before other repairs can be made to the bridge, but are hopeful that this should be completed within the next 3-4 weeks when the bridge can be open fully once again, but with a weight limit of 3 tonnes intially.
