Creating Maps for Garmin

An interesting article explaining how to create your own maps. The example given is for Brazil.
I assume the process would be the same for any map data if you could obtain the necessary info.
A bit too technical for me, but maybe somebody might like to try it out and report back?
A database of map files on the board for areas not well covered by Mapsource/Navtech would be usefull.
Morroco would be a popular choice I think.

Is it possible to alter Mapsource maps to include data of your own?.

I`m thinking of the Navigator software (ROM based in the unit I think) that contains BMW dealer locations. I`d like to include things in my maps but dont want to load them as waypoints as they can get unmanagably large.

The BMW Dealer locations are just waypoints accessible through specialised menu structure.

Whilst time consuming to create maps for Garmin the biggest difficulty is establishing the data for generating a route. The tracks is not an issue as they effectively just record the sampled WGS location.

Garmin have produced a product "MapSource Product Creator (MPC)" for third party developers but restrict access to those areas that they do not want to be involved with (Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Hungary, Norway, Ukraine, Sweden, Poland, Finland, Czech). I like the description of the Finish map that it includes "bog areas"!!!!

I know the Hungarian one includes auto-route calculation but it is all in Hungarian and I have lost touch with that as a language (could not say much - please, thank you, bog-off)

The South Africa developers ihave a version for Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho and expanded South Africa. Like the Bosnia one I don't think minefields are indicated....

BMW Dealers

City Nav 6 which came with my 2610 has all BMW dealers in the software. But does not include the likes of Clarks Birmingham and other bike only franchises.

None of the third party tools currently support auto-routing so, yes, you can add things to your existing maps but when you save them you will lose your auto-routing data in the mapset.
