My old estate has a towbar and dual electrics fitted by the previous owner.

However the electrics dont seem to work when its hooked up to a borrowed trailer, from Pipster. The trailer works when its on Pipsters motor.

Lou bought me a cheap multimeter thingy but I'll be damned if I know what i'm testing. There is only one recommended auto electrician in town and they charge and absolute fortune . Probably £60 just to look at it.

ANybody with any electrical knowledge offer any hep or advice/ suggest someone who could take a look ?

Thanks in advance ,

Ian

Have you taken the plug to bits its most likely corroded wires due to the winter salt ....;)and the fact that it has not been used for a while :thumb2

Trace the cable back into the car and check for damage they tend to wire them to the car harness by the rear light set up ...unless your car has a pre wired junction box ...

If you dont have any joy bring it round mine and I'll do it for you I've fitted loads of towbars :thumb

I had to re-wire my trailer plug and I used this

13 pin plugs are the way to go in the future:thumb

if it has Dual electrics, one socket will be for powering caravan internal electrics (maybe a white cover) The other socket is the car/trailer socket.

The Car/trailer socket should be like this http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?i...mages?q=towbar+wiring+diagram&um=1&hl=en&sa=X
Good luck.

Yeah the left hand socket seems to be for charging the battery / keeping the firdge running, the right one for the trailer. Thanks for the diagram Keith thats v' useful :thumb2

Thanks for the offer Phil but the trailers on long term loan.... only because I haven't had time to bring it back to you yet.:augie I can't really turn up at your place asking you to take a look at the car electrics without bringing the trailer back can I .....:p

Sockets are coded 12S and 12N .
I've had trailers wired up wrong before it's a doddle to suss out..

Numbers are on back of connectors sometimes numbered in the old way eg 54r = Blue=2 IIRC

Thanks Proff. I am going to take the existing socket apart and have a look at the connections etc clean the pins up and see if it works . If not I'll try wiring up a new socket. :thumb2

Its not a fuse some of the lights work, most don't ;)

Cheers mate I'll give you a call if I get stuck:thumb

I had the same load of problems on Saturday with my trailer lights - couldn't figure out whether it was the car, the trailer plug or what.

Easiest solution - go to halfords buy a trailer light board - £30 includes all bulbs and 4m of cable and plug. Stick yer number plate on and tie it to the trailer. Handy of you are using borrowed trailers coz you want have to keep swopping plates over.

My trailer is for borrow when you need it ( or if Pipster wants his back ).

Oh yeah - only works if the trailer is the problem!
