Goodwood 'Convoy' ride-out Saturday, February 28th

Thanks for the vote of confidence GreatScott - not sure that I am any more qualified than anyone else (less probably as I am only 4 months into GS ownership). But that said, its clear that what started as a whimsy has caught everyone's imagination. Must be the first inklings of the forthcoming Spring weather although we may well end up cold and wet. :blast

But with anything up to 20 Tossers already signing up and with 3 weeks yet to run, I think we may need to think smart. So here is a suggestion.

As some of us come from the deep South Coast and others from much further away, I think we should plan at least 2 separate groups with differing itineraries and finish points.

We can still all meet up for a fry-up at Goodwood (we'll warn the cafe about the meet in advance) and we can then put names, handles faces and bikes together and generally socialise. Good grounding for later meets I suspect and it allows us the chance to shoot the breeze with fellow Tossers that we only know through this board.

I think 2 groups of 10 (or 3 groups of 8 for example if more join) is a much more feasible ride. We could always make-it more fun by appointing a team photographer from each group and then posting the results on this forum.......er.......or not. :toungincheek

So, we are now 20 Tossers (any suggestions for a collection of Tossers? How about a w@nk of Tossers?)

I think of you have a route which ends up just north of Chichester, Midhurst, Petworth, Petersfield or somewhere, then after a final rendevous peeps can head off in their own direction?

I often do rides with this large a group and that seems to work well usually, as does your suggestion of splitting the group

I'm a 'possible'. Would love to come along and meet you good people and have a fun day out.

I might be there, depending on the issue of a 'leave pass' from 'er indoors. Better start grovelling now I guess.

So let's start by suggesting this as a possible route for the South Coast participants and leave the thread open for alternative suggestions if anyone wants to structure a different itinerary to end up elsewhere.

  • Meet at Goodwood Aero Club for fry-up at 10:00
  • Departure at 11:00 onto A285 to Petworth
  • Petworth to Midhurst A272
  • Midhurst to A3 (Petersfield) A272
  • A3 south to A272 exit
  • A272 to A32 crossroads for coffee at Loomies
That is about 40 miles, say 45-60 mins of easy riding. Time for a brew and a natter and then onto the next stage leaving at say, 12.30.
  • A32 to A31 (we pass Bahnstormers if anyone needs anything)
  • A31 to B3006 (Selbourne Road)
  • B3006 to A3
  • A3 northwards to Liphook exit
  • B2131 to A283 (Petworth Road)
  • A283 south to Petworth
  • A283 Petworth to Fittleworth
  • B2138 to A29
  • A29 south to the big layby at the Bury Hill Whiteways lodge roundabout. Easy parking, lots of room, grub and drinks from cafe.
This should take about 75 minutes or so and we should get here around 14:00 to 14:30 hours. That leaves us some time for a chat and yet more grub/brew before sloping off back to the salt mines.:ronno

Sounds like a plan to me :thumb2
Don't worry about the numbers turning up. Been on a few large rideouts and there great fun. Maybe worthwhile employing a drop off system though :nenau.

That's a thought, PJ1200 :comfort

Well a 'drop-off system should be easy-enough to organise. Here is a brief description of a drop-off system for those Tossers not familiar with it:

DROP OFF SYSTEM OF GROUP RIDING

This is popular with groups going on long rides. Understanding the system is important as every rider needs to do their part to avoid anyone getting lost.

One leader is responsible for navigating the route and one sweeper (two sweepers when the ride is big enough) is/are responsible for ensuring the run stays together. These are the only rider’s who maintain their position in the group at all times.

At every junction the rider immediately behind the leader stops and marks the junction. All other riders pass the marker except the sweeper who signals that he/she is the last in the group. The marker then re-joins the group 2nd from the back.

This approach involves the entire group and the marker gets rotated from front to back and naturally moves up to the front again. The method works perfectly provided everyone makes clear, safe markings and doesn't forget they are in the No.2 position, when it is their turn to mark.

Nobody other than the sweeper is allowed to ride last for any reason whatever. If you want to leave the group you should pull in to the left in a safe, visible position and wave other riders past. When the sweeper arrives he will stop and you can then inform him/her that you are leaving the group and why. So does this seem like the sort of ride everyone wants? Or do we just adopt a more freewheeling system where everyone knows the route plan so they do it as they feel happiest and in their own time.

I have no preference but, then again, I have ridden these roads for years. Others may enjoy the safety of the 'drop-off' system but if we are all 'local'...............!

This is a perfect route and the roads superb... lets stick together with a lead rider and sweeper.... it will be much more fun in a large group!!!....

Any other rules/routines we should follow??

I like to have a 'no overtaking' rule in a large group riding situation, having almost been "cleaned up" from behind by a dozy girl trying to overtake me (despite the rule) on the approach to a junction during a Royal Navy Motorcycle club rideout.

No names, no pack drill......

Yup, I agree - let's aim for one big group with a Dayglo-wearing lead rider and similarly equipped Sweeper or even 2 Sweepers if this gets much bigger.

As to more specific road rules, here is a linky to a well-written and comprehensive description of the 'Drop-Off' system and general behaviour for safety during a rideout.

So unless we hear otherwise, let's assume that all those who have already registered and all future participants are happy with the route and schedule and that they agree to abide by the ride's rules-of-the-road as outlined in the document referenced above. It makes a lot of sense to have a structure if we are going to be between 20 and 30 bikes.

Can we have the OK from those already listed please.:type

seems fair to me.... and no faster then 30 mph over any set speed limit...:augie... ( I'd better bring my Daytona...... to keep up with you 12 boys...)

Big OK :thumb2 from me!

I've always been impressed how well the drop off system works.
It also gives everybody the chance to enjoy the convoy passing in its full glory as you mark a junction

Who's booking the weather? :hide

Its a 'OK' from me.
As long as its not a driving miss daisy kind of speed.

Oh no offroading then.:(

But apart from that BRING IT ON...!:thumb2

Those rules sound good an reassuring to me. Other than the Plymouth Mega Ride I've never ridden in a group of more than 4 or 5 so was starting to get a little nervous there watching the numbers swell.

Can't wait now though as most of my riding is done on my own between home and the work place, unless I can find some one to play with on the way.

Great route aswell OldRascal I take a detour home on some of those roads when the weather invites it, they make the perfect antidote for a day stuck in the office.

+1

splitting the group should keep the pace up to moderate ;)

Goodwood Ride

I am very much up for this ride but rules rules rules. How about a bit of spontaneity, turn up say hi cup of tea then off ride at your own speed take a map if you are not sure where you are going.I have been on loads of rides large and small, take your metaphoric helmet off feel the wind in your hair if you have any left, ride and enjoy.
Hopefully me and the missus will be at goodwood on the day.

Is St. Richards A&E still open, or do the Ambulances take you somewhere else now ?:nenau

Well its obvious that there is no such thing as 'one size fits all' when it come to organising a rideout. Its understandable that some like the comfort and security of a more structured set-up and others want the freedom to go at their own pace, do what they want and go whichever route they fancy.

That said, there is no obligation upon anyone to follow the guidelines for this particular rideout if they don't want to. They can just do whatever they fancy of course. But it seems that there are a fair number of forumites who like the idea of a rideout which has been well planned in advance.

That is why I suggested all meeting up for breakfast and generally getting to see old friends and greet new ones. Then those who want to make their own way can do so whilst the rest of us can enjoy a more structured day out. To each their own I think, there's plenty of us to do both. Whatever, its going to be a good old day out and should signal the beginning of a long, hot summer. :Motomartin

Hope this makes sense. :beerjug:
