Swiss Alps Tour: Day 1 - Vevey to Verbier

Looks fine to me but only on iPhone as am away till tomorrow.

I would suggest that you don't offer the route up for discussion too much as there will always be someone saying it is too long/short etc.

Most days there will be a direct route to the hotel so if someone who bought his GS to pop to Tescos and back is finding it too much to actually use the bike then they can go straight to the hotel and put their feet up.

We did over 200 miles a day on Route Des Grandes Alpes last year and it was fine

Actually I only shop at Sainsbury's. It's amazing what you can get in the panniers.

My 5 Centimes worth as I am near the start point and this is a route a few of us in Geneva do occassionally (fondly known as the Tour du Mont Blanc).

It can be done in a long day without to many problems, but you will need a stretch at the end. Getting away early is the obvious key.

My thoughts/suggestions would be;

1. Hit the Autoroute from Vevey to Martigny. Yes, I know it's autoroute, but the side road is not a great deal of fun as it can be busy with slow local traffic and once you get past Aigle some of the traffic calming and the like starts to wear you down. The view is largely the same from the Autoroute and you will eat the miles, leaving you more time to enjoy the mountain roads later,
2. Martigny to Chamonix is a good run, good roads and fabulous scenery.
3. Flumet to Beaufort is good, but the road deteriorates as you get to the high points (at least it was like that last year). Watch for gravel picked up in some of the corners. The road gets very narrow as you descend into Beaufort
4. Beaufort and across to Italy, also watch road quality. It's good but you won't break speed records.

This is on the Italian side

5. The road up to through to Aosta is good and drops into a great gorge for part of the route. It is easy to get tangled up in the main highway, but again, you can make up a little time here if you need to.
6. Aosta to Col du Saint Bernard is straightforward. The real fun is the last climb to the top of the Col and then the decent back to the main road. From there is it straightforward to Verbier.

The route is great, don't be too put off by the distance.

Thanks very helpful.

Thank you for putting routes and distances up for discussion and peoples thoughts. Strangely enough most people contribute in a positive way and don't make unhelpful arsey :)comfort) comments.

Anyway keep up the good work it really is appreciated.

Bandit,

Having done a number of similar trips myself,I was merely suggesting to Magnum that he doesn't offer up too much for discussion,route-wise.

Strangely enough, everybody except one :comfort seemed happy to use his judgement.

Magnum did the trip last year and knows what is and isn't possible.

It's his trip and opening up every last coffee stop and toilet stop for discussion is adding to his already considerable workload.

sounds like sense to me :)

Sorry, been out of internet contact for a bit. Not sure why the photo is not coming up now - it is a link from Picasa. It's just a little pic of my bike in its original trim before I started fiddling with it parked up near the pass on the road to Beaufort from Italy. Trying again below, let's see if it posts.

I hope none of my comments were seen as detracting from the route, it is a great run and one of our favourites out of Geneva. An excellent first day that gives a real flavour of the region. Wineries, Castles, Mont Blanc, three/four excellent passes (depending on your definition), challenging variety of roads, parts of the Tour de France circuit (it goes through Beaufort). The list goes on - a great route.

Anyway, here is a link to the photo - it feels like a bit of a let down after the buildup...

Any news on day2 yet :augie
I'm bored and want to plot it on mapsource errrrr..... I mean plot it onto my paper map ;)

Quite happy to repeat Day 1 for Day 2 etc, but others just wanted to go with the flow, so either way, I'll oblige :)

Well, no-one seems to have officially signed-off Day 1's proposal, so I'd like to propose Day 1 as it is, so that digs can be arranged.

Seconder?

Secondly, I am grateful for the time and effort you've put into this, and I was rather hoping you would repeat the same exercise for Day 2 to nn!

I've even started a diet...

Go Mags! Go Mags!

You clearly don't sleep very much....

I would like to second Yoys proposal that Day 1 is signed off as agreed. Bring on Day 2 Magnum.

How about Magnum just publishes each day for those (like me :hide) that want to plot it on Mapsource and leave it at that ?

He knows the territory, having done it last year.

That way any stragglers/early risers can still get the day done without any bother to others.

It's not a military operation that needs to be discussed to the last half bloody mile.

It's supposed to be enjoyable !!

Yes. Exactly. Which is what I said.

However, there are clearly some people in the group that do have issues or concerns or a lack of adventure outside of Tesco's car park. For whatever reason, their experience is either limited per se, or limited in regard to an Alpine adventure. I'm in the latter group, and appreciate all and any of the comments, suggestions, and banter.

I think it's only right that the details are posted, as you've suggested, but to stifle discussion is tantamount to censorship, or bullying, isnt it? No-one has to follow the route(s) precisely, or even be on the same stretch of road at the same time as others, but the difference is there should still be an opportunity to voice an opinion here and now, and at the time.

Personally, I couldn't care if we ride 400 miles a day, or 40. I'd also be happy riding alone, or in a conga, at 20 miles per hour or 80, as the mood takes me. I have no pretensions of riding round the world (although I am planning a jaunt to the Himalayas next year, if anyone's interested). That said, I'm not entirely into the tree-hugging-hippy-happy-clappy-crap. So long as the spirit is there, where's the problem?

With a group of this size and ego-diversity, I think we should perhaps be a little more sensitive to those of us with smaller penises.

Like me.

Magnum, you're doing a great job, thank you.

Just my deux centimes. Rant over.

NURSE!!
