Hi all,

as the Atlantis is a leather suit, I presume - like all leathers - it needs occasional caring for. And I don't mean just a cleaning, but proper care as in preventing the leather "ageing" if you know what I mean?

Like you should take good care for a pair of walking boots, where you impregnate the boots, not only to keep the boots watertight, but also to keep the leather supple and thus preventing from developing cracks and what not.

So: what's the correct, or commonly accepted way to go about taking care of the atlantis 4 suit?

Sorry if this question is allready asked, maybe some pointers then to the relevant thread.

Thanks a bunch!

I've an Atlantis III. I know that the IV is a little different in that it doesn't have separate GoreTex liners but the leather seems to be the same.

All I've ever done with mine is chuck it in the washing machine, it always looks like new after a wash and it's never needed any special leather treatment.

I'd be wary about using anything on the outer that wasn't BMW recommended (they do some stuff for it but I've never bothered).

The jacket can be machine washed , using a detergent sold by BMW .
Warning :there are 2 kits , both are labeled as leather cleaning products ,but one kit is especially designed for the Atlantis range.
I completely f***ed up my jacket using the wrong stuff. I shall post the offending part number.
Keep It moist:D

So can the strides. I use mine more than the jacket and they get washed quite frequently.

I've got some of that jollop somewhere, I used it once, it didn't seem to work any better than a non-bio washing liquid (and the non-bio stuff hasn't harmed my suit).

The best stuff I've found for leather gear in general (not specifically an Atlantis suit) is called Effax Lederbalsam. I got it from my local tack shop, kind of a Hein Gericke for horses. It rubs in on a cloth and leaves the leather with a wet, greasy finish for about 24 hrs and is gradually absorbed in. Leaves the leathers supple and relatively waterproof.

Thanks for the tips, all.

I think I will opt for the "safe" bet and go for the BMW product. The Atlantis cost me enough to be a bit anal about the stuff I put on it, or wash it in.

About keeping it moist: that's not too difficult in Belgium, don't you worry :D.

Cheers!

I am looking at the care instructions for the Atlantis 4, which appear different to the Atlantis 3.

They say do not wash and ...... "every 2-3 years, return the garment to the leather manufacturer for special treatment. Your BMW dealer will be happy to provide advice." You can also get advice from the specialists at BMW UK.

Where are you seeing these instructions? Both my Atlantis 4 jacket and pants say gentle, cold machine wash on the sewn-in label. Unfortunately the rest of the labels' printing is worn off and i am not sure if they list recommendations about detergents. I have the spray-on waterproofing from BMW to treat it with after washing. I'm also not concerned about cleaning the outer surface, it is the interior that is quite funky from recent summer trips...

My Atlantis 4, bought in late 2016, says "Do not wash" on the sewn in label. My jacket says "Made in Bosnia" - is yours from another European country?

Send it off too either scrubbers or Sketchly (at a local Sainsbury's) to get it cleaned. Won't cost that much and if it goes tits up, you've someone to claim against for a new one.

Please excuse me for reviving an old thread. I read somewhere that my Atlantis needs reproofing professionally every few years. It transpires the company BMW recommends to use for re-waterproofing is in Austria, but UK BMW dealers used to arrange the reproofing service. The professional reproofing service is not cheap (165 Euro) but less expensive than a new pair of Atlantis/Furka trousers.

Unfortunately, my BMW dealer told me: “due to Brexit and us no longer being in the EU, they no longer offer this service to customers outside the EU.”

I don't want to make this thread about Brexit, but it would be great to know how to get the Atlantis 4 professionally reproofed. Scrubbers Leathers, perhaps? What do you think?

No need, waterproofing will last for years. May go grey and may become smelly. I wash mine and use the stuff in the video. BMW haven't offered the service for years. Before Brexit. Scrubbers is very good, teaches leather maintenance at Northampton Uni. BMW used to sell a maintenance kit, no longer. Sdoc 100 is the same stuff. Not cheap. Brush out the bugs, do not use any silicon base spray. You will fuck up the jacket. Sdoc hasn't got silicone, I asked them.

Many thanks @zoltan

I didn't realise Damien taught leather maintenance at Northampton Uni. Though I gather he studied some form of textile technology at (Warwick?) university himself; hence Scrubbers' service is so good.

I sent him a RUKKA Lancelot jacket which was covered in white paint, I ended up selling to him. He wanted to experiment some cleaning tech with his students.
