Anyone got a cr500 lurking in the garage. Condition unimportant as ill fix it up. I want to replace the wr400 with something more fun that will try and kill me at as many opportunities as possible.

I used to have a CR 500 about 14 years ago, I met the guys from bike who were doing the coast to coast off-road on a trail near me.
I got a mention in that article and they described it as the most ferocious bike away from a 500 GP bike.
I used to love it and actually found it relatively easy to ride but it scared my mates shitless:D
The day I got it I went for a quick blat up the road and heard this weird tapping / knocking sound. Thought I'd got a pup.
When I jumped off it I realised the torque had ripped all the knobbles clean off the middle of the back tyre and it was them hitting the mudguard.
Back tyre destroyed in about 400yds:eek::D
Twas a bastard to start in winter too. As a 9 stone 15 year old I had to resort to a teaspoon of juice in the pot and warming the plug to get it to fire or get my pa to tow me down the road behind the car:p
Ah, happy days.
Post some pics of it:thumb2

brought it where

brought.. bought... youd never have guessed i went to school would you :D

Will do pigglet. Im going to pick it up tomorrow. CANNE WAIT :aidan
Sounds like found memories though haha.

Plan is to strip it completely and build a proper race bike for enduros. Not going to tune the engine at all as its good enough as is and dont want to make it any more unreliable.

But top quality suspension and wheels is the main priority.

Im also going to get a crm250 frame... put the numbers onto the cr frame... and change the engine displacement to 500... so itll be a road registered crm500 ;)

You're going to do what? :eek
Are you feckin nuts? Have you a death wish?
Had a go on a mates CR 500 when I was racing. Fairly grunty bottom end, no problems up to about half throttle, but then the revs built up, took it just over the edge, and BOOM. Off like a scalded cat. Very entertaining on long, flat straights. You needed a lot of strength or talent to get the best out of one, which is why I gave it him back smartish.
He sold it a few months later, after one too many trips into the crowd.
Nostalgia.........
When you get it sorted, can I have a go? :D

haha course you can. Just make sure your health insurance is up to date etc ;)

I picked it up today. Started really quite easily to be honest. Even in trainers.

Sounds... AMAZING.. theres no way of describing it really.. its got an fmf race pipe on it and... well it gave me the horn haha

I didnt ride it as the chassis needs alot of work. But ive ordered some decent front forks, shock needs sorting, and need to decide on some new wheels.

But the main thing is the engine runs perfect :)

Now to start the strip down and powdercoating :D

Sounds like a really cool project:thumb2. You've got me thinking about a little trip down memory lane myself:blast

There was an extended thread on Visordown maybe 4 years ago where a youngster dropped a CR500 lump into a 50cc thing and turned into a SuperMoto.

It has probably been pulled now as he killed himself on it in the end. :(

I remember reading through that project. I didnt think that a 50cc frame would have handled the vibes but .. cest la vies and all that.

Project update :-

New parts are piling in the already rather full garage

New TMS racing exhaust
New chassis
New swingarm
New rads
New subframe
CRF forks & yokes have arrived
CRF450 rim, disc & tyre arrived

Need a caliper and master cylinder, clutch lever & perch (i think i should get one of those unbreakable ones)

I need some fatbar convertors & a i want to replace all the cables.

Now its powdercoating time :)

well, slight update on the old project front (see i am actually doing this one instead of flogging it after a couple of weeks. Its been 2 weeks and its still on the go!)

I am installing everything on a spare frame whilst the other one gets powder coated.

Heres the cockpit set up. Digital vapor dash shows everything you could ever want to know and more besides. Ive got the extra cockpit surround for indicators, high beam etc. Its going to be a race bike primarily but i want to be able to ride it at night on the local trails. Also you can spot the hydraulic clutch set up on the left. I need to sort the other end as the piston is designed for a wr450 which has a very different clutch actuation, but it will be sorted later.

CRF450 forks installed. - its now bloody tall! a good 6" taller than the bike was. Coupled with the fatbar converters, it fits me just right! Its got mega ground clearance which i think will be handy. Im going to need to play around with the rear shock though to sort the steering angle. Might make it sharp and put a steering damper on it.

Latest problem though. Both radiators are shagged. The right one is heavily bent upwards (but doesnt leak) the left is missing a couple of brackets for the rad guards.

Technically i could still use them but again, im spending so much on it, theres no point in scrimping. So i need to sort a new pair. Or I will look at maybe getting them repaired.

And heres a bit of engine porn.
