The countries are really starting to clock by, so far since leaving Ireland I've been through Wales, England, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, and now were in Germany, it seems mental to think that by the 2nd of May I'll be in Moscow.

One of the places we were most looking forward to stopping in was the Nurburgring, one of "THE" places where people who want to go "fast" make their way to.

You show up at the track and pay in to do a lap. As we were waiting around we saw everything from Porches to Nissan Micras, a volkswagon van, and even a family going round in what you would describe as a granny car. When you consider that you have to share your lap with people who are going round at speeds of up to 200mph its absolutely mental, to think that you have Porches and Micras competing for the same racing line round the track is just insane.

When we were there we met two folks from Cork, James offered to take me round the track so I could film Barry and Phil as they went around. I couldn't chance going myself on the bike, its gotta get me to New York... (Yeah yeah... I know I'm a wimp!!!)

The video above doesn't really do it justice and James took us through some corners so hard I accidentally turned off the video by accident...but its absolutely mental fun.

We had a great time there, if your in this part of the world, I really encourage you to go, even if you don't out on the track its a great day to just go to a viewing point and watch all the various cars pushed to the ragged limit on the track.

From there we went into the town and had a few points as we retold the story of going round over and over again... "Did you see that bollix in the black corvette!?" "I thought that Porsche was going to kill you!!".... and so it went till long after the sun went down.

Sorry about all the bad language in the clip... but if you can't swear on a race track.....where can you!!!

Take it easy!!

Loving life in the Nurburgring!!

We left Nurburg in the direction of a town called Nurnburg (extra n in there just in case you think I'm losing it) which is close to the border with the Czech republic. About 5 minutes into the journey our visors were covered with sleet as the temperature gauge dropped to one degree. I think we all thought, ok the weather has been great so far, we were due a bit of bad.

It stayed freezing cold all day and we were stopping often to lower tea, coffee, and anything hot we could get our hands on. We kept saying to each other.... can you believe its nearly May...and its sleeting!!

We kept the heads down and the arses up and finally got to Nurnburg where we went out looking for something to do, harder that you might think. We gave up after a couple of hours and had an early night. The next morning Phil had a serious dose of the ringaskiddies (KFC at 10pm ....nuff said) so we pottered off to get him something to settle his stomach down and take some pictures of the town.

The fucker beside me in the internet cafe has just let a thunder clap fart.....bollix!

Anyway we left the town early the next morning and were only twenty minutes on the road when we pulled over for some tea. As we were coming out I noticed a leak on my final drive. The 1200 GSA has really 2 weak points, one is the electronics on the ignition system and the other is the final drive, so for the second time in a year my final drive shit the bed.

So much for making it to Prague today, but all was not lost. I pumped in "BMW dealer" into the GPS and there were heaps of them within thirty miles (this is Germany after all). The first one didn't have the parts but the second one did, not only that as soon as I arrived they put the bike straight up on the lift and started working on it.

Phil and Barry continued on to Prague and I told them I catch up with them there tomorrow, it was only 200km away.

From the moment the bike docked in BMW they had between 1 and 3 guys working on it flat out and got me back on the road by 6pm that evening. The great thing is that this was one of the key mechanical things I was worried about for Mongolia and the road of bones in Siberia, and the fact that its been completely stripped out, seals changed, and the bearing changed means I should be golden now till I get to New york....every cloud has a silver lining I guess.

Even though it was gettingon for 6pm I said I'd burn on for Prague getting there just as the sun was dropping below the horizon in my rear view mirror, I knew where the lads were staying so they were there waiting for me and helped me unpack the bike. About one hour after I docked the three of us were settling down to a seriously good steak and some great beer served by Monika. Man how a bad day can turn good!!!

Tomorrow its time to get out and see Prague....

Take care...and a big thanks to the guys in BMW for sorting me out so fast!!!

The big fella

Glad you got things sorted so swiftly...

If that's the worst that's going to happen I'm sure you won't mind...

Hope all stays well...

We got up this morning to go out and see what Prague had to offer. All three of us were nursing another in a long line of hangovers, at about a buck fifty a beer, we've been doing the whole "The more you drink the more you save routine".....and we've saved a lot!!

All day we'd glorious sunshine and we got through about seven or eight miles as we walked from one touristy area to another. Much like Bruges, Prague is a place where around every corner theres something to take a picture of.... not surprising then that its wall to wall tourists.

At one point Barry really felt the hangover biting and had to lie down on the ground, as he said himself "couldn't walk another step!", you can see him taking 40 winks in the picture above....

To give him a break we pulled in and got one of those charichature(cant spell that word with a hangover)drawings done, couldn't have been in a better spot, sitting on a bench on the river bank with the palace in the distance and lots of boats cruising up and down the river.

We went to all the big stuff, the two main squares, the anatomical clock, the palace on the hill, the bridge with all the statues (these all have names I know...ref: early remark about hangover) and then we finished off with the Jewish graveyard where a tiny plot of land has the graves of 100,000 folks who all wanted to be buried there.

The Czech women would leave you foaming at the mouth, we were rubber necking all day... "Bar Dunne ..12 o clock, Phil... rear view mirror...blah blah".... they didn't seem as taken with the three hungover paddies for some reason.

After all the site seeing was done it was time for one more night on the lash after we all got washed and changed we went off on a pub crawl passing several stag nights who'd dressed the stag up in some seriously dubious looking kits.

My only problem with all the heat and walking around is because i'm space constrained and I'm packed for Mongolia and Siberia I've been going out in hiking boots. We've hit a lot of disco bars and you wouldn't believe how hard it is to get down to "Daddy cool" by Boney M in a pair of Hob nail boots.

If your planning a weekend away.... you'd go a long way before you'd beat Prague, the place has a great vibe.

Take care and God Bless
Oisin, Barry, and Phil.

This is a cracking read. thanks for taking the time to post it all. :thumb2

Definately ... thoroughly enjoying the thread :)

You've covered some distance in a short space of time, thats pretty impressive.

Looking forward to more Oisin.

I said good luck to Bar Dunne and Phil as they turned for home, was feeling pretty blue when they left. A fairly big chunk of me wanted to just go home as well, I think its the thought of whats coming.... I'm closing to the end of the easy stuff if you know what I mean.... once I get to the Ukraine things go into the unknown... here be dragons!

I left Prague heading east for the town of Kutna Hora, its famous for having a church full of human bones for decoration....when I got there however there wasn't anywhere to park the bike and It was too dodgy to leave the bike alone so had to pass on going in. A pain in the ass but one of the downsides to travelling alone.

From there I made my was across country roads the whole way to the border with Slovakia..... only a couple of years ago this border would have been quite difficult to cross into, now since Slovakia joined the EU...you just drive right in. If ever there was an advert for the EU this is it... driving from country to country unhindered..... lord knows what it will be like in the Ukraine, Russia and Mongolia.

It's been a harsh winter in Europe but now that spring is in full bloom the bugs are out in force, at least over this way....

Slovakia based on only a couple of hours experience mind you is more mountainous and has less good looking women. Everywhere takes the Euro which is dead handy and its about 30% cheaper than the Czech republic. I didn't know what to expect of the country really, but just like the rest of Europe you don't get any hassle and everyone is friendly enough and do their best to help you.

I ended up in the town of Bojnice which has a wonderful castle as you can see from the pictures above. When I was 5 minutes from the hostel after eventually finding it I came upon an accident where a car had hit a motorbike.... I couldn't help but think that if I had'nt got lost that could have been me....the road ended up being closed and sealed off.... so....lost again!....getting a feeling that is going to be a recurring theme of the rest of the trip.

The routine every night now will need to involve a map and a highlighter pen.....although you do get a lot more out of navigating with a map.... a bit more of a sense of achievement......aww who am i kidding I wish my GPS worked!! Boooooooooooo

Tomorrow I'll be staying in a town called Turna Nad Bodvou, its still in Slovakia and gets me within a pube of the Ukraine border.... make no mistake I'm shitting myself about into the Ukraine; more out of ignorance than anything else......

In the meantime.... let me roll out a big.... "Dude!...you just rode your motorbike to Slovakia!" and sit back here and bask in the glow of self praise!!

May the force be with you!.... best of luck to Bar Dunne and Phil on their way back to Ireland!

Over and out....
Daddy Cool.

I continued east today (will be saying that for a long time!!!) ....in the direction of the town of Kocise, the second biggest city in Slovakia, not far from the border with the Ukraine. Along the way I stayed mostly on E50, a road which runs east to west almost the length of Slovakia, but did take the opportunity with my acre sized map to go cross country and cut off some loops in the road.

The sun shone all day, the roads were good, and was about as uneventful day as its possible to have.

The further you go east the towns seem to get a bit poorer and most seem to have a big dirty chimney stack in the middle. I passed what i think was a natural gas outlet and they plumb it along the road, and loop the pipe up over entrances to shops etc......mad looking. The architecture is non existent in some of the towns; just square highrise beside square highrise, a flashback to 1992 when the country was part of the Soviet Block. In 1993 it split with the Czechoslovakia to create the Slovak republic.

You wouldn't believe how different the people seem here versus only a couple of hundred miles ago.....the mix where I am is Russian, Ukrainian, Slovak etc...its like a different world to where I was only yesterday. If you consider in the Czech republic most of the folks I interacted with had a good smattering of English and German, here, no one has a clue what I'm on about.

On the way I passed the town of Turna nod Bodvou, it was one of the places that the lads in the long way round spend the night in.... looking around it looked like an absolute non event of a place.... I asked myself...what the hell did they stay here for....especially with Kosice up ahead....when I got to Kosice I found out.

The first thing your greeted with is a sprawling steel works and then a seeming infinite amount of billboard signs and advertisements. The place was pure urban sprawl so I doubled back on myself and stayed on the outskirts. Tomorrow I'll start early and hopefully get through the border with the Ukraine without much difficultly.

Tomorrow i'll cross into the Ukraine.....
Let the madness begin!! :)

Over and out
Oisin

ps

I've been washing the clothes I've been wearing under my motorcycle gear daily, which amounts to me doing a disco dance on them while I'm taking a shower and then hoping they'll be dry by the morning...just in case your wondering why I included a pair of socks in the photo's above

Loving the report so far, especially your inimitable and enjoyable narration. Best wishes onward.

That's it, I may have to sell my soul to the Devil (again:augie) but I'm going to get accross there myself:bounce1

How many times can one individual sell their soul ??

This is the sort of reaction that makes reports like this so brilliant - inspiring people to consider doing trips of their own...

Well done Oisin - fingers crossed for an attractive and engaging female border guard for you tomorrow...

Am heading to Prague (and hopefully beyond) two weeks on Saturday.

Oisin's pics have been a great taster. :thumb2

I left from the outskirts of Koscice in the pissing rain, almost as if it was turned on to coincide with the beginning of the hard stuff. After about 90 minutes I arrived at the border of the Ukraine.... never having left Europe before over land I hadn't a clue what to expect.

I met some border guards who were very friendly and helpful, I secretly hoped that this might be the Ukraine side, obviously it went really quickly, they told me it might not go so well on the Ukraine side, Doh....was just leaving Slovakia.

I drove up to the Ukraine side and was stopped by two soldiers who started making a big deal that I didn't stop when they asked me too (my arse), I could smell the shakedown.

After keeping me for about ten minutes and bullshitting on about the fact that I didn't stop and was also missing a sticker (wanted to say...."do you think I'm buttoned up the back") I handed over the ten euro bribe and was on my way to another pack of freshly castrated crocodiles in customs and the "stampy stampy" pasport bit.

They told me I didn't have a green card and that I needed to go back. I had done the research and had no idea what they were on about, but one of the other lads there from god knows where had one....so I said ok ...fuck it. Just when I was about to head off for Poland which would mean entering russia via lithuania as you can't get through Belarus (about a 1000 mile detour) one of the girls who worked there called me back and processed me. I asked them was I ok to go, and they gruffly waved me on.....like most border officials these fuckers moonlight as phlegm.

The only positive to take from it was that two of the border officials were insanely hot blonds (a taste of what was to come?) and I was officially in the Ukraine. Just a comment about the whole bribe thing, at this stage I'm used to it..but it confirms that if you get into trouble in these countries its the guy with biggest wallet who gets off every time...simple as that.

Before I get into describing the Ukraine it might help to describe what I was expecting. Well heres what I knew going in.....

It was the most wealthy region of the Soviet union and the richest in oil etc. So much so that modern historians reckon that had Hitlers army headed south to Ukraine and taken it instead of heading north to Stalin grad he would have won the war in Russia. It separated from the Soviet Union a number of years ago so I was expecting something about 33% poorer looking than Slovakia if you know what I mean... but not a bad spot.

Well once I crossed the border... you question that jumps into your head is "Who flicked the switch!".

The farms are worked with horses and carts and people till the soil with hoes and shovels...whole fields! Anyone whose ever used a hoe before..... and I used to be a pretty keen gardener will tell you its a bit of graft...now imagine doing it for an acre! The road which I took was in pretty bad condition and the towns which I passed through were in really bad shape. This area actually used to be part of Poland before world war 2, looking at how it looks now I doubt they'll be looking for it back anytime soon.

I made my way to the town of Lviv, its in the North west part of the Ukraine. The roads along the way were somewhere between terrible and ok. At one point I turned back twenty miles because the roads were so bad I thought I must have taken a wrong turn, no way this is the road to such a major city.

As the day wore on a couple of trends started to emerge.
The first, this part of the country at least, is as poor as they come.

Second the churches and graveyards in the place are really incredible, no matter how small the town they all seem to have fabulous churches with shiny gold and silver roofs, the contrast between them and the surrounding poverty couldn't be starker.

Third the people seem very gruff.... In the first day I interacted with say ten people, and of those 3 of them were polite the others were like trying to take a bone off a pit bull. Now its not like i'm debating politics with these folks. The extent of my interactions are ... can I have a room and heres some dosh for your trouble, can i have some petrol and heres more dosh and can i have some food and more dosh; thats pretty much it.

I finally made it Lviv and booked into a hotel, the really hot blond trend continued and the folks there were really nice, a welcome change from the folks I'm met along the road and at the border.

I went out and about in Lviv to see what I could see but the weather was crap so I gave up pretty quickly.

The language/place names/ menus / directions using Russian is proving pretty challenging. I'm double checking the map every twenty minutes to make sure that I'm going the right way...you can see some examples above......the blue signs are one in English, the other in Ukrainian.

The first day was tough, and it was the culture shock of the century, but I live to fight another day. The hardest thing to get the hang of is the people, bar the girls in hotel and two cool guys I met while I was parking up the bike, the rest of em are a bunch of fuckers.

Tomorrow I've a massive run to Kiev, we'll see how we go
over and over

Glad they let you in comrade !!

Hope those tyre dealer details emailed reached you. But that you don't need them...

Stay safe

I cant get over the contrast between one side of the border to the other in the last set of pics.

Still enjoying the 'journey' oisin, keep posting.

Its good to see a little of the world through another persons eyes.

You'll be right

Great stuff,

if u r having a culture shock I suppose the people u meet on the road could be having a bigger one meeting some mad paddy who can't speak the lingo and is the size of the jolly green giant!!:comfort

Concentrate on them beautiful girls, they are very friendly:thumb

Bon journo.
